It was a pretty exciting weekend, where three top ten teams went down and many more almost went down. This weekend’s schedule does not look very tantalizing, which inevitably means some craziness will ensue. Let’s jump in and see what Woody is watching this weekend.
Alabama at Mississippi State, Saturday, 3:30 pm
Alabama welcomed Louisiana State to town and promptly punched them in the nose and stole their lunch money. Alabama remembered how good Derrick Henry was and handed the rock to him over and over again. Henry repaid the Bama coaching staff’s kindness with 210 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Mississippi State gives up 168 rushing yards a game so expect Henry to keep running in this game.
Mississippi State comes into this game with a 7-2 record and the number 20 ranking for some reason. Their seven wins have come against:
Southern Mississippi
Northwestern State
Auburn
Troy
Louisiana Tech
Kentucky
Missouri
Which one of those wins exactly makes them deserving of a two loss team in the Top-20? MSU is led by QB Dak Prescott who has combined for over 2,700 yards and 25 touchdowns on the year. Playing this game in the middle of cowbell land will help but I think the Tide will roll.
Prediction: 35-13, Bama
Memphis at Houston, Saturday, 7 pm
This game lost some of its luster when Memphis lost to Navy last week but this will still be a fun game to watch. The man Buckeye Nation misses, Tom Herman, brings his Houston Cougars into this game with an amazing 9-0 record. Houston won a nail-biter on Saturday as they beat the Cincinnati Bearcats 33-30. Houston is led by do-everything QB Greg Ward Jr. who has combined for over 2,900 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns.
Memphis lost a heart-breaker to Navy on Saturday 20-45. I had a pretty good feeling the #13 Tigers would go down in this one because the Navy offense is incredibly hard to prepare for. Memphis allowed Navy to run for 374 yards on 66 rushes. Offensively, Memphis was able to move the ball around to the tune of 438 total yards but they had three turnovers which hurt pretty badly. Memphis is led by a great QB of their own, Paxton Lynch. Lynch has thrown for over 3,000 yards and 19 touchdowns in nine games this season. I think this will be a high-scoring affair.
Prediction: 48-37, Houston
Oklahoma at Baylor, Saturday, 8 pm
Both of these teams have a very realistic chance of making it to the playoffs if they win out their games. The path for the Baylor Bears is pretty straight forward, win all of your games and you will be in the playoffs. The nation is already enamored with the Baylor offense but they are just waiting for real competition to see just how good they are. The Oklahoma Sooners are in a different boat. They dropped that brutal game to Texas where they were humiliated by a bad team. But if they win out and other undefeated teams fall, the Sooners will be right back in the mix. Both of these teams start an absolutely brutal stretch of games. The Sooners finish up in the next three weeks with Baylor, TCU, and Oklahoma State. The Bears finish up with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, and Texas.
Jarrett Stidham is now at the helm for the Baylor offense and played well in his first game. Stidham threw for 419 yards and three touchdowns in his first start. Oklahoma has their own QB who can also put up a lot of gaudy numbers in Baker Mayfield. Mayfield has combined for over 3,000 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns on the year. This will be a wild shootout and I think we lose another unbeaten team.
Prediction: 63-49, Oklahoma
