What Is A Typical Weekly Grocery Bill?

This fellow, self-proclaimed "Supermarket Guru" Phil Lempert claimed on NBC News yesterday that the typical grocery bill for a family of 4 was now $400 per week. At last I swear that is what I heard.

At which the wife and I looked at each other and said, "Which of us is spending the other $150 a week?" (Our bill ranges between $60 to $70 per week per head - and we eat damned well).

So, on a per capita basis (as not everyone has a family of 4) what is your typical weekly supermarket or grocery bill?

This does not count dry goods - it is only food purchases.

To help I've broken it down into poll selections - with the bidding at a low <$70 and ending at a greater than $110 per head range.

That is a question that would be really hard to get an accurate read on. We don't have a regimented grocery schedule, we basically shop monthly. I would still guess quite high before the coupons kick in. Usually well over 500 before the coupons, luckily after the coupon it's more in the 250 - 300 range.

For my family, my parents typically spend anywhere from 100-200 dollars depending on what we need.

$125-$150 a week depending on how many steaks I load up on.

400 seems really high. Ours varies here with just Me and the fiancee. Allot is going to depend on things you don't have to buy every week.

Per capita = per person? So, a family of 4 spending $400 a week is $100 per capita?

If so, we're probably below $50. Of course, my wife can (and does) survive on oatmeal and raisins.

Grocery bill = $30 a week (not including beer, wine and liquor purchases)
Restaurant/bar bills = $300 a week

I bet the chains to keep her restrained in the basement set you back more than $50? Though they are of course a one time purchase.
