What happened during Smith's suspension?

You kids stay off my lawn!
Anyone who saw practices between last year's Alamo Bowl and the season opener, did Troy Smith get any reps during his suspension?

Was it all Zwick and Boeckman? When a player is suspended does that mean just for games or does it mean for practices and games... the later sounds more like "thrown off the team."

I would say that Zwick got all of the snaps with the first team. Since he was our only QB that the coaches were going to play.

Boeckman would have been scout team. The coaches didn't want to burn his red shirt, so they knew he wasn't going to play. So why give him snaps with the 1st team?

I doubt Smith got anything in practice.

is this just a guess teddy? They reported all spring/fall that they were splitting reps. There did seem to be some times where Troy was not practicing, but he definitely got some reps in practice.

smith did not get to practice before the alamo bowl and did not travel with the team, however in the offseason he did see some time with the first team to prepare for his eventual return. but Zwick got most of the attention with the first team to prepare for Miami since he was going to start for sure.

TG05 - Sounds like you misread CB's post. He said after the Alamo - Boeckman was no longer red shirting. It was public knowledge that Joe Daniels was lobbying to get TB snaps with the 1's. That'd be a good reason for it to happen.

He also directed the post to people that had seen practice . . .

I don't know why CB is asking, but it's always good to hear how things really went down. Does anyone know how the snaps were split up in fall camp? We showed such great promise at the end of '04 to see it move backwards at the start of '05. I sure hope that we can do a better job of picking up where we left off this year. We'll need the extra Off. output early next year.

I wondered because Troy was not the Troy we know until after the Penn State game. I wouldn't blame Tressel for wondering if he could trust Smith and be sure that the NCAA was satisfied. But, if he felt Troy was going to be his #1 once the suspension was over, and if the season was going to be defined by Texas, Iowa, PSU and Michigan, then Smith needed to be ready to go.

Yeah, hind sight is 20/20. But it just strikes me as something to wonder about. Maybe the line, Smith, receivers, Pittman, needed time to jell as a unit... or maybe Tressel thought Zwick was going to be his QB, or maybe, to prove his point to Smith, Tressel took the chance that he might lose some important games early, but felt that for the long run it was more important to make the point to Smith.... Just pondering....

With the switch from Texas Tech, Washington, Wazoo to Texas, FSU and Miami, Tress has apparently elevated the importance of early games. Seems to me that puts a premium on having all your horses ready to go. But I would certainly say that princlpals are more important than victories... even victories over Texas.
