Michigan beat Iowa 23-20 in OT.

Northwestern annihilated NO. 22 Michigan State, 49-14 in East Lansing. QB Brett Basanez was 24 of 30 for 331 yards and 2 TDs, and also rushed for 17 yards and 2 TDs; RB Tyrell Sutton had 109 yards and 2 TD's on 21 carries.

No. 4 Georgia survived in a squeaker over unranked Arkansas, 23-20.

In a battle of offensive juggernauts, Alabama bested Tennessee, two field goals to one (that would be 6-3)..

After upsetting Florida State last week, No. 23 Virginia lost a classic "trap" game to North Carolina, 7 to 5 (sounds like a baseball score).

In a somewhat meaningless game, Mizzou beat Nebraska, 41-24, to take control of the Big 12 North Division; Mizzou QB Brad Smith had 234 yards passing, 246 yards rushing, and 4 TD's overall.

Texas Christian beat Air Force, 48-10; looks like TCU is the 2nd best team in the state of Texas.

No. 9 Notre Dame slammed BYU, 49-23.

In a battle of contender versus pretender, undefeated Texas (#2 in the country) creamed undefeated Texas Tech (#10 in the country), 52 to 17. Now, for breaking news, Texas Tech's defense really sucks....

No. 1 USC rebounded with a 51-24 win over PAC-10 cupcake Washingon.

Wisconsin beat hapless Purdue (weren't they supposed to win the Big Ten?) 31-20.

Penn State blasted Illinois (go Zook!) 63-10; does Isiah Williams really want to be a part of that mess in Champagne?

UCLA beat Oregon State 51-28 to remain undefeated.

LSU edged Auburn 20-17 in overtime; can anyone in the SEC play offense?

Surprise! Surprise! Florida State beat Duke 55-24.

purdue is actually coming out to play. I never thought we'd see 10-10 at halftime against Wisky. I thought they'd have to win a shootout. No reason it won't turn into that soon tho.

Vince is struggling so far (I really am pulling for him in NY). They are ahead by a bunch, so I doubt he'll get too many chances to redeem those stats. Hopefully I'm wrong. VY doesn't have the luxury of being worshipped by the media like Leinart, so a game like this could hurt his chances of catching the untouchables.

He is 7/12 81 yds 0 tds 1 int 3 carries 17 yds 0 tds

IMO Northwestern today showed that they are a B10 title contender. They went to MSU and smacked around the same team that gave us everything we could handle at home. I don't care how much of a hang over MSU had, when you get beat 49-14 you are not the better team.

NW is the toughest team in the big ten right now, IMO. If we can keep up our offensive performance from today, I might change that viewpoint. However, until we do that, I would rather play us than NW if I were another big ten team.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to call NW the toughest team in the big ten, Josh. They have some offensive firepower, to be sure. But, MSU's D isn't all that great.

<TABLE border=0><TBODY><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD align=left>Oct 15, 2005 </TD><TD align=left>West Lafayette, Ind. </TD><TD align=left>Northwestern 34, Purdue 29 </TD><TD align=right>Box score</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD align=left>Oct 08, 2005 </TD><TD align=left>Evanston, Ill. </TD><TD align=left>Northwestern 51, Wisconsin 48 </TD><TD align=right>Box score</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD align=left>Sep 24, 2005 </TD><TD align=left>Evanston, Ill. </TD><TD align=left>Penn State 34, Northwestern 29 </TD><TD align=right>Box score</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD align=left>Sep 17, 2005 </TD><TD align=left>Tempe, Ariz. </TD><TD align=left>Arizona State 52, Northwestern 21 </TD><TD align=right>Box score</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD align=left>Sep 10, 2005 </TD><TD align=left>Evanston, Ill. </TD><TD align=left>Northwestern 38, Northern Illinois 37 </TD><TD align=right>Box score</TD></TR><TR bgColor=#ffffff><TD align=left>Sep 03, 2005 </TD><TD align=left>Evanston, Ill. </TD><TD align=left>Northwestern 38, Ohio 14 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

And as you can see from the scores in these contests, NW's is worse. Hardly what I'd call the toughest team in the Big Ten, but to each their own.

lemme rephrase (which is a staple of my posts).

I think NW is the most dangerous team right now. That would be a better way of describing my fear of facing them as a head coach. I think we may be more tough all around, but with what they are doing recently, our battle against them may be our toughest defensive challenge yet.

JWin, last week you were talking about how horrible MSU's defense is...why should today boost NW's rating any more? They got killed against ASU, gave up 34 to PSU, and 48 and 29 to Wisky and Purdue.

They will get some yards on the defense we play, but don't discount last year's memory or the fact that the 'Cats are coming to the 'Shoe.

The offense must improve, but I would much rather face a hot offense than a dominating defense any day.

Edit: was typing while BKB posted...so this is already covered

perhaps. I like OUR team playing NW, but if I were another big ten team (which this year doesn't often involve much defense), I would not want to play them.

defense does win championships, but I'm not sure I would bet against NW playing any other team than our own (that was the latter part of my statement, but I seem to be stuttering a bit in my delivery today)

I'd be more worried about playing any team with a great D before I'd be worried about playing a team with a great O.

Time and time again, we see great D shutting down "great O's" and winning. NW has to outscore you.

While I would accept that few teams in the Big Ten have a "great D" (maybe 3 do) and that makes NW "scary" I'd still worry more about getting shut down by OSU than outscored by NW.

All that said, MSU's O doesnt suck and they only managed 14. Still, that's kinda MSU's MO over the years, show up one week, take the next 2 off.

anyone know what NW did to slow down that passing attack? That was what surprised me, had they won another 50-42 shootout, I would have felt much differently.

Yahoo--But the Spartans' own mistakes -- two interceptions in the end zone, two missed field goals and a fumble that was returned for a score -- allowed Northwestern to take a 21-7 halftime lead.

Sounds like MSU dug their own grave today.
