I’m sure you’re aware of this by now, but if you aren’t, the Ohio State women’s basketball program have received an individual and team recognition this week. With the opening game set for Friday at #2 South Carolina, this is a big week for Ohio State.

Kelsey Mitchell names to AP Preseason All-American List

Sophomore Kelsey Mitchell was named to the AP preseason All-American team on Tuesday. She was understandably also named B1G preseason player of the year.

From the OSU Athletic Department:

The Cincinnati, Ohio native was also named to five other preseason All-America team in addition to being named the Big Ten preseason Player of the Year. Mitchell averaged 24.9 points per game last season which led the NCAA and scored a total of 873 points which was a Big Ten and OSU single-season record. She also made an NCAA single-season record 127 three-pointers last season.

Also from the OSU AD, here is the list of the AP preseason All-Americans:

Brianna Stewart, Connecticut
Tiffany Mitchell, South Carolina
Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State
Moriah Jefferson, Connecticut
Nina Davis, Baylor

Ohio State Picked to win Big Ten Title

Also this week, Ohio State was picked by ESPNW‘s Graham Hayes to win the Big Ten title. Here is Graham’s very brief take on the team.

Ohio State (24-11 overall in 2014-15, 13-5 in conference play):Ameryst Alston and Kelsey Mitchell came within three points per game of outscoring an entire Division I team a season ago (sorry, UC Santa Barbara). But it’s the help on hand this season that should have fans in Columbus doubly excited. Understandably overshadowed by Mitchell, Alexa Hart is back after totaling 129 blocks in her freshman season. A contributor once she was eligible midway through last season, Shayla Cooper is available for the full run. And four players, including co-captain Kianna Holland, are back after missing the season with injuries.

This is interesting because Friday’s season opener against South Carolina will pit preseason expectations against reality. The Gamecocks also have an AP preseason All-American in senior guard Tiffany Mitchell. They have an honorable mention preseason All-American in sophomore forward A’ja Wilson. As Ohio State is a preseason pick to win the Big Ten conference, South Carolina is the preseason pick to win the SEC title. Also, the Mitchell’s, Kelsey at Ohio State and Tiffany at South Carolina are preseason Player of the Year in their conferences. This is going to be a heck of a game.
