Vietnam Traveling Memorial

LoKyBuckeye

I give up. This board is too hard to understand.
I got a chance to visit the traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial today. I was born in 1975 so obviously I can't remember anything about that war.... it really puts things into perspective when you see all those names on that wall. Movies and books can only tell you so much about what happened... I had a chance to speak with a man who served in Nam today and somethings he said just blew me away. He didn't get into very much detail (and I wouldn't really expect him to since I was a total stranger) but you could tell that he was very affected but the memorial. Every name on that wall was somebody's son. brother, husband, friend and family member.

I know that it gets said on this board from time to time but a BIG THANK YOU goes out to all of you guys who have served or are currently serving in our military.

Below are some pictures that I took from the visit. (Thumbnails finally working... all images are 800X600 when you click on them.)

I've been to both the traveling memorial and the one in DC. I was in high school when I saw the one in DC and either due to youth or lack of experience it didn't effect me. However when I took my daughter to see the traveling one it was quite different. I tried to explain to her that these were the names of people who had died in a war. She asked me if any of them were daddies. I told her that there were probably a lot of daddies who died there. It just kind of struck me that what if my name was on that wall, I would never have known my wife or daughter. I nearly lost my calm and almost started crying right on the spot. It was a very solemn experience.

note: I'm not a Vietnam Veteren. I am a bit too young for that.

Unlike LoKyBuckeye, I was born in 1948 and do remember the war. Fortunately during my senior year at Ohio State, President Nixon started the draft lottery. I got a 266 (it will always be my lucky number) which got me out of the draft. I have known (and do know) a lot of guys who were in Viet Nam. I agree with LoKyBuckeye "a BIG THANK YOU goes out to all of you guys who have served or are currently serving in our military." Here is a summary of the casualities:

Saw the Traveling one a few years back.....

I got to see the Guy who Baby-sat Me and My Brothers
A "Robert Dice" From Akron

He was killed there what was called small arms fire or something like that, I was 12 or 13 years old at the time, I remember all the Crying and sadness .....My Dad Was The Pastor of the church He attended and Said It was the Hardest thing he ever had to do..Bob was one my dads best Friends.....

I remember the day Bob was drafted and he came over to the house and My dad helped him with his Draft papers and set up his Will...

Sad

I seen theTraveling Wall a few years ago @ My College that I graduated from.

I have the Utmost respect for ALL Vietnam Vets or any vet, I was in total AWE of the men and woman who gave all. The War was such a Big FUBAR that words can't describe what the men went through in combat and coming home, those who made it.

I agree with all the sentiments here.

Hopefully people will spend their time and/or money visiting one of the memorials, instead of and in lieu of spending any time and/or money on Jane Fonda's new image reclaimation tour. If people really want to help heal the country from this tragic event and get a sense of what it truly means to so many families, a memorial is always a good place to start. I hope future generations will be properly instructed about the circumstances and the heroes from that tragic period (I'm not holding my breath though, at least in the schools).

Note: The D-Day museum in New Orleans is also a great place to visit either Memorial Day or Veteran's Day.
