Here is the deal...I am looking into taking a vacation at some point in the next few months but aren't really sure where to go...Here is the criteria I am looking for...

I am just out of college and have a decent job but nothing over the top

I am not looking for basic ideas like Hilton Head...instead I would prefer a specific hotel there or a specific island

Going to Boston to tour the Sam Adams brewery or down to Louisville for the derby are possible options

As always greenies for good destinations or stories...

Can you give more info? What types of things are you in to? You say Beantown for the Sam Adams brewery, so does that mean you like good beer and aren't opposed to a cooler, non-tropical climate? I've got a few recommendations in mind depending on your answers.

I am definitely a fan of good beer. I have been skiing since I was 2 and love the cold weather. My girlfriend is content with sitting at a beach and doing nothing. I prefer to be active and go on excursions etc.

Basically I am in for just about anything. I am interested in everything from skiing in the rockies to beaches in FL to anything else. The budget for any of these trips can be from $500-$1500.

My only rule is I don't want to be the guy who arrives at the destination, stays in an amazing hotel, and can't afford anything but McDonalds for meals.

Ok, a couple of suggestions:

1) Burlington, VT. Really cool little town with a heavy college influence. The Magic Hat brewery is just outside of downtown and right downtown near Church Street, where there are tons of good restaurants and shops, is the Vermont Pub and Brewery. Right on Lake Champlain and absolutely picturesque. Mountains and ski slopes all over the place. VT is cheap compared to other areas of New England like Boston/Mass, Connecticut, and even Maine. I can give you a few recs if you decide you're interested. Would really be a great fall destination. A few pics:

2) Consider Canada (all you need is a passport). Right now, we're back on the right side of the exchange rate, so you get a bit of a boost right out of the shoot. I would recommend Quebec--either Montreal or Quebec City. Both great cities; both sit on the St. Lawrence. French is typically the first language, but almost everyone speaks English and there is no negative stigma to being an English-only tourist, as there often is in France. Montreal is much more metropolitan and probably has more nightlife. Quebec City, however, is a really great venue if you're going with your girlfriend. My girlfriend and I just got back from a 3-day weekend there and had a great time. You can go as expensive or inexpensive as you like on food in either city. We had a cheap meal of cheeses, meats, and wine last night, but had extravagant 5-course, world-class meals the first two nights. Some of the best food I've ever had. In either city you'll have great slopes, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing all around the city. There are several regional breweries whose beers dominate the bars, pubs, and eateries, the most notable being Unibroue. Here are some pics of Quebec City:

That's the Hotel Frontenac that dominates the landscape (don't stay there if you're on a budget, but do stop in for drinks). We stayed at a great B&B in the old city, within walking distance of anything you could want, for $140 Canadian a night (right now I think that's around $120/night). You could probably do cheaper, but I would suggest staying in the old city so you can walk everywhere. Here's the place we stayed, which I would highly recommend:

Bed & Breakfast quebec city B&B / G?te au coeur du Vieux-Qu?bec

Other suggestions:

3. Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC are cool southern cities, on the cheaper side of things, that are really a lot of fun and a good destination for couples.

4. If you want to do Florida, I lived in various spots over the years and my favorite area was the Tampa/St. Pete region. Much, much cheaper than SoFla, and much, much more going on than North Florida (though St. Augustine is pretty cool).

5. Places I haven't made it to yet but may fit your needs (I plan on visiting each soon), all of which would probably be cheaper than Boston:

Newport, RI (best as a summer destination--it's quintessentially New England and has a pretty famous yacht and boating scene)

Portland, ME (skiing nearby; Dogfish Head, Shipyard, and Allagash breweries; on the water; supposedly a great food scene)

Portsmith, NH (skiing nearby; Smuttynose Brewery; on the water; quaint New England town)

Give me a PM if you're interested in any of these places and I'll help as much as I can.

quebec city is cool. it is very euro feeling. though this time of year is certainly still very cold. it has a very romantic old world type feel.

you might actually check out europe. a few people ive known have gone there this year for relatively decent prices, some flights are down to $500 round trip to certain cities at certain times.

I call bullshit. The media and President Obama tell me there are no jobs and no money.

Juarez natives will tell you that if your not involved in the drug trade, it's a very nice, family oriented town. But, that doesn't sell news or get headlines. I've been there and it was very quiet with no signs of violence.
(hear that, Dayton?)

The summer after I graduated 3 buddies and I went on a weekend Bahamas cruise. When I got married my wife and I took a week long Central American cruise.

Each trip was fantastic. The cruise had as much partying and adventure as we 21/22 year old guys could handle...but had plenty to do for families, couples, & even older vaccationers. The places we docked were great. There were plenty of excursions offered on each cruise. You could be as crazy and active as you could handle, or as laid back and restful as you wanted as well. Each had as many broadway shows, art auctions, shopping, site seeing, casino gambling etc. as my wife and I could handle...and more eating, drinking, dancing, and partying as me and my friends could handle.

I went parasailing with my buddies and again with my wife. My wife and I hiked through jungle ruins, had a picnic, then floated down the river on an innertube.

I liked that we could make the vaccation whatever we wanted, pre-planned or even change it up minute by minute. They were both great experiences with tons of memories.

And the food is GREAT!

You can't go wrong with San Fran. there are tons of interesting things to do in San Fran for a couple days, great food, hiking in the redwood forest, Alcatraz, North Beach, Mission District, etc.... you are within a couple hours of north or south of both the Monterey Peninsula (south) which has Pebble Beach, Carmel, Monterrey Aquarium, or an hour an a half northeast to Napa Valley/Sonoma where you can tour a shitload of winery's and get drunk. There are reasonable Bed and Breakfasts all over out there that allow you to stay right where you want. We usually spend a couple days in each place.

I recommend these guys, they have a place anywhere you want to go, you can spend a couple days all over the place and they usually have deals where a a second night is free, or stay three nights get the 4th free. We always stay in these when we go out there, the hospitality is awesome, they have great local knowledge and you cannot beat their locations.

Not within driving distance: SF or Seattle

Driving distance: Boston would be a great shooting-off point. There are tons of things to do here, but Portland (ME) is only two hours away (great seaside town), great skiing is two or three hours away (I recommend Vermont), Portsmouth (NH) and its great breweries are less than an hour, Newport (RI) is a little over an hour. There's always Cape Cod, which is a few hours away.

Listen Brah, I don't mean to point out the obvious - but I think I have to.

You're just out of school and you want to go some place fun with friends. A place that can offer you a great deal, where there are TONS of things to do and the hotels/resorts are willing to shape what they can offer around what you're looking for. You're equally interested in night time activities as day time activities and good food seems to be important.

There's this little place in the desert of Nevada that can satisfy all of those. Not sure if you've heard of it. It's called

LAS VEGAS

In all seriousness, Vegas is getting CRUSHED right now because of the recession. I'm getting pamphlett's every three weeks about deals in gambling, resort stay, food and show discounts, golf discounts, helicopter rides over the grand canyon...you name it.

It literally is the perfect time to call up, tell them what you want to do, and say - Make me a deal. Then call every other hotel and ask them the same thing.

Great bargin time in Vegas. Go for it.
