TV Show - Sports Kids Moms and Dads

Has anyone seen this show? I caught a few minutes of it last night and all I have to say is these parents are freaks, especially the ice-skating and cheerleading parents.

The cheerleading mom is nuts. She tried out and did not make the cheerleading squad as a kid so now her goal is for her daughter to be some national cheerleading champion (I had no idea they had such a thing). The daughter practices 6 hours a day. The football dad is just as insane. He has hired a professional trainer for his 8 year old. He basically has said he is trying to achieve his NFL dreams through his son.

My wife and I felt guilty after watching some of the show last night. I am now calling around trying to find some personal trainers for our 2 year old. We obviously have to give up on our 4 year old as it is too late for him. :wink2:

Dealt with one of those...kid graduated 2 years ago.

He was injured during the winter of his sophomore year and could not lift nor practice. When the season rolled around, he was cleared to participate. Of course, in the first scrimmage, he did not start. The father asked why...I said he was about 500 groundballs and 500 swings behind.

Mistake.

The dad took the kid out to the field on saturday and hit him 500 groundballs and made him take 500 swings...and taped the whole thing for proof.

I've watched the show. I think that all of them are a little nuts. The one thing with teh dad that I found weird is that he doesnt have one job so that he can be there when ever his son needs him. Probally the most sane one seems to be the mom that is the basketball coach. She actually pushes the importance of school which the others have not done yet

Maybe you could go on that show buckeyefool with your dad being your spelling and grammar coach.

Although i am sure that some of this is dramatized just for the sake of the show. It is still insane. We actually held our 8 yr old out of a few baseball practices this year because 3 teams is a little too much baseball and let him go swimming with his friends. Although that is now over since he broke his foot climbing a fence, and was pretty bummed that he would miss the rest of the season. Before you guys freak out, he wanted to play in all 3 leagues, we didn't make him. I even tried to talk him out of it but he really wanted to. Now if I could just get the 5 yr old to stop playing in the dirt on defense... :shake:

Don't hold your breath on this one. Several years ago ABC did a show on parents just like this, and there is an organization based out of Miami, Fl called National Alliance for Youth Sports. NAYS, as it is known, works with youth sports organizations to educate their board members, coaches, officials and parents on proper etiquette in youth sports. If it wasn't such a problem we wouldn't need this organization or any of the other smaller ones across the country. It truly is scary!! Ohio, along with SC, Michigan, NY, and California each have youth sports committees that run through their state parks and recreation associations to combat this crazy behavior as well.

If you would like more information, let me know. Check out this sight, too for info. http://www.nays.org.

It's not just a problem with parents and their own kid(s). I know a guy who wanted to start a 3rd grade girls basketball league a few nights a week during the school year. He approached the school board about using the gym, and told them that he "had all the girls picked out and everything". He had the starting lineup all figured out and hadn't even mentioned it to the girls or their parents to see who might be interested. He just assumed that every 8 year old girl would love to play basketball every night, or their parents would want them to. Amazing.

Ridiculous and sad...

We get the stage moms on a regular basis... very similar mindset. One poor girl wasn't allowed to do anything but practice or perform music... no time with friends, no other hobbies, just hour upon hour of practice around a home-school schedule set up for that purpose. Her mother wrote me a ten page email about how to make a program fit the career goals she had set for her daughter. Also, when her daughter was on site with us, I should be careful to watch her because she has panic attacks and faints, and sometimes she tries to run away. But don't mind if she suddenly starts crying... don't want to encourage that bad behavior.

Just one of many... I'm in an odd position calling out parents when I am not one myself, but have to admit I've done so rather viciously on more than a few occasions. So far so good, as it seems to help, and most of those families ended up becoming good friends over time. There are certain goals in life that require incredible commitment and pushing your own limits... but especially with kids, have to remember to live a little life along the way, too.

That's crazy.

When and what channel is this on? I'd love to check it out.

It is shown on Bravo. I turned the TV on after 11 last night to catch the news and my wife previously been watching Queer Eye. I was instantly drawn in to the trainwreck of parenting.

I think last night's was a repeat, but if memory serves me there is a new one on tonight at 10.

And sometimes these kids end up resenting their parents so much that they retaliate in a bad way. Did anyone ever see the segment on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" where the dad was putting so much pressure on his son to become a big high school football star in Texas that the son eventually snapped and shot his father to death?

Interesting.......As far as that cheerleading crap goes, there are only about 8.6 bajillion national sanctioning groups for cheerleading, that all present "national" championships. The mom ought to be able to get her daughter a "championship" from one of them. I remember the "competition" cheerleading squad from our HS went to one of these things, a "national" championship in Williamsburg, Virginia and I about choked on my pop when I asked the girls about the event because

a-they went to Williamsburg for 4 days and did not see one historical thing-colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown battlefield, William and Mary, etc, but went to the outlet mall a bunch of times-I know these are teenage cheerleader girls, but the history teacher in me was outraged

b-I asked them how many teams they competed against there, and they said 4!
