Lots and lots (and lots more) has gone down in the nearly 15 months since Braxton Miller was ruled out for the 2014 season.
Awards. Benchings. Injuries. Position Changes. Suspensions.
Who could have possibly foreseen the emotional vortex that awaited the Ohio State football team and its many followers after quarterback Braxton Miller was lost for the 2014 campaign two Augusts ago? The resulting 14-plus months have seen many highs, many lows, and a whole lot of unexpected drama.
Aug. 19, 2014: Ohio State announces Braxton Miller will miss the entire 2014 season
Miller, the two-time reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, was ruled out for the season after suffering another injury to his right shoulder in practice. Miller originally hurt his right shoulder in Ohio State's 2014 Orange Bowl loss to Clemson. This news likely prompted thousands of Buckeye fans across the country to text, 'Who the hell is J.T. Barrett?' to each other.
Aug. 30, 2014: The J.T. Barrett era begins with a win over Navy
Barrett, the redshirt freshman quarterback who beat out Cardale Jones for backup QB duties in fall camp, was solid in his first start, completing 12-of-15 passes for 226 yards and two scores. Barrett also rushed for 50 yards on nine carries. Buckeye supporters were surely freaking out at halftime when Ohio State was trailing 7-6, though.
Sept. 6, 2014: Barrett throws three interceptions in shocking home loss to Virginia Tech
There's no sugar-coating this one: Barrett really struggled in Ohio State's 35-21 setback, completing 9-of-29 passes. He also averaged less than three yards per carry on 24 totes running behind an overmatched offensive line. Outback Bowl, anyone?
Nov. 8, 2014: Barrett, Ohio State stun host Michigan State, reemerge in playoff picture
Barrett accounted for five touchdowns and nearly 400 yards of offense. At one point, Ohio State scored touchdowns on six straight possessions. The Buckeyes won 49-37, leaving the home fans feeling some type of way.
Nov. 29, 2014: Barrett fractures ankle in win over Michigan
Barrett had Ohio State up 28-21 before breaking his ankle early in the fourth quarter, ceding the starting role to Jones. Google searches of 'Cardale Jones' quickly acquainted the uninitiated with The Tweet.
Dec. 1, 2014: Barrett named Big Ten Quarterback of the Year
Barrett earned the honor after passing for 2,834 yards and 34 touchdowns in addition to rushing for 938 yards and 11 scores. Barrett broke the Big Ten's single-season TD mark with 45 scores (in addition to 19 school records), and he finished with a passer rating of 169.82, which was good for second in the country.
Dec. 6, 2014: Jones, Ohio State throttle Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship
Tell 'em, Gus.
In his first career start, Jones completed 12-of-17 passes and tossed a trio of touchdown passes (39, 44, and 42 yards) to Devin Smith. In the most complete game played vs. a quality opponent in recent memory, Ohio State blitzed Wisconsin 59-0. A day later, Ohio State was named the No. 4 seed in the first-ever College Football Playoff.
Jan. 12, 2015: Jones, Buckeyes route Oregon to win inaugural College Football Playoff
After piloting Ohio State past top seed Alabama, Jones overcame three turnovers -- though the Buckeyes' third-turned-first-stringer was fully culpable for just one of those miscues -- and delivered a series of clutch plays, as Ohio State was 8-of-15 on third downs and 3-for-3 on fourth downs. Jones accumulated 280 total yards and scored two touchdowns.
Jan. 15, 2015: Jones bypasses NFL, returns to Ohio State
Citing his desire to continue his education and admitting he didn't feel ready to make the jump to the pros, Jones announced his decision to return to the Buckeyes, seemingly ensuring a three-way quarterback derby with Miller and Barrett destined to break the internet come fall camp. Jones' call to come back to Columbus was somewhat surprising given that at least one NFL executive believed Jones could've been a first-round pick.
March-April 2015: As Miller and Barrett recover, Jones goes through spring practice as the No. 1 QB
With Miller (shoulder) and Barrett (ankle) on the mend, Jones was the undisputed top QB through an uneventful spring practice.
July 23, 2015: Miller announces intention to move to H-Back/wide receiver
By moving positions, Miller lightened Urban Meyer's load in the quarterback derby. And given that Miller's shoulder was not going to be 100 percent to start the season and that his NFL destiny was highly unlikely to take place at quarterback, Miller's decision was a no-brainer.
Sept. 7, 2015: Jones starts at QB, but all three of Ohio State's 'QBs' shine in season-opening win at Virginia Tech
Following a secrecy campaign that would've made the Kremlin proud, Jones was revealed to the world as Ohio State's starting quarterback when he trotted out for the Buckeyes' first offensive series of 2015. Jones finished with three touchdowns and nearly 300 yards of offense in Ohio State's 42-24 win. Miller averaged almost 18 yards gained on eight touches and scored two touchdowns, including breaking the internet with a gaudy spin move. Oh, and Barrett threw a touchdown pass in mop-up duty.
Sept. 12, 2015: Barrett relieves Jones late in second quarter vs. Hawaii
This is when Ohio State's quarterback surplus officially became a headache for Meyer. Jones started, but was replaced by Barrett for the final three series of the second quarter. However, Jones started the second half and finished the game.
Sept. 19, 2015: Jones benched in 2nd quarter as both QBs underwhelm vs. Northern Illinois
After Jones threw his second pick of the game, Barrett took over for Jones in the second quarter and played the rest of the way as Ohio State escaped Northern Illinois.
Oct. 3, 2015: Jones plays entire game as Ohio State fends off Indiana
Following some improvement vs. Western Michigan, Jones played the entire game for the first time all season in the Buckeyes' 34-27 victory at Indiana.
Oct. 10, 2015: Barrett installed as red-zone QB, offense finds rhythm vs. Maryland
Ohio State seemingly found a workable formula in this game: Jones as the starter and chain-mover, Barrett as the touchdown-maker once the Buckeyes crossed the opponents' 20. The concoction worked to perfection vs. the Terps as Ohio State scored six touchdowns in six red-zone forays. Jones threw for a career-best 291 yards and two touchdowns while Barrett rushed for three scores. Oh, and Miller, largely relegated to Wildcat snaps in recent weeks, added five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Oct. 17, 2015: Barrett emerges after relieving Jones early in second half vs. Penn State
With Penn State clamping down on the Ohio State offense, Meyer finally relented and turned to Barrett after Jones led the offense nowhere in two third-quarter drives with the Buckeyes ahead 21-10. Most observers figured Meyer would tab Barrett, who accounted for four total TDs vs. Penn State, as the new starter in the coming days.
Oct. 24, 2015: Barrett starts as Ohio State powns Rutgers
Everything is seemingly right with the world as Barrett starts for the first time since last season's Michigan game. With the QB run game unshackled, Barrett sliced and diced the Rutgers defense to the tune of 324 total yards and five touchdowns. The Buckeyes pasted the Scarlet Knights 49-7, and it seems as if Ohio State's dynamic offense is rolling once again. Jones sees the field after the game is well in hand.
Oct. 31, 2015: Barrett cited for OVI, garners one-game suspension
Barrett was cited for a misdemeanor OVI offense last Saturday morning, and Meyer eventually suspended him for this week's game against Minnesota. Jones was named the starter for the tilt against the Golden Gophers, with Miller -- who has yet to attempt a true forward pass in 2015 -- installed as Jones' backup. Drama reigns once again.
