Buckeyes travel to Happy Valley for what will certainly be another late October white-out.

Ohio State has won 5 straight, including a couple of memorable comebacks, since the Nits got the upset win in 2016 via the blocked FG return.

For Penn State to get back toward the top of the Big Ten East Division after finishing fourth last season, coach James Franklin is going to need to find a way to amp up the offense. The Nittany Lions got to work this spring after a disappointing 7-6 showing in 2021, and Franklin discussed what he views as the biggest questions coming out of April: the punting situation, offensive line and linebacker.

"Who's going to be the punter, after losing maybe the best specialist in the country? That's a big question," Franklin said, via Tyler Donohue of Lions247. "Is it Barney (Amor), is it Gabe (Nwosu) or is it Mitch (Groh)? Or is it a really talented guy coming in, in (Alex) Bacchetta. Talking to (former Penn State punter) Blake Gillikin, who I think we all had a ton of respect for, he's worked out with him. Blake says he's the best freshman he's ever seen. So we'll see how that plays out.

"Offensive line, who's going to replace the guys that left? And can we take a step where you guys ask about the offensive line, I say something, and then we back it up on the offensive line? (That) has been a question. I think the other question is linebacker. We lost some horsepower at the linebacker position. I think we got a pretty good idea who the two outside linebackers are, and we had great competition at Mike linebacker between (Tyler) Elsdon and Kobe (King). And I would say, as the staff and managers will probably tell you this, they probably did better than we anticipated. So we're a little bit further ahead there than we thought.

"Those are probably the big things, and then obviously hiring a new defensive coordinator. How is he going to fit and match after we have had so much stability at that position for a long time? But that's been good so far."

Any chance this is a noon game?
According to a thread ($) started by a mod on their On3 site, the answer to that question is a surprising "yes."
I confirmed today that Penn State's home game against Ohio State for Oct. 29 has been selected by FOX.

The World Series is scheduled to start Friday, Oct. 28, meaning there will absolutely be a Game 2 that Saturday night, Oct. 29. Because of that, a noon ET kickoff for the PSU-Ohio State game is basically a lock. FOX wants its best games at noon ET anyway, but even if they could shift it to 3:30, you run the risk of the college game cutting into World Series coverage, which MLB won't tolerate. Having Penn State - Ohio State at noon ET, plus the World Series at night, creates a massive ratings day for FOX, so you can start planning for that now. I'm confident.

I can also confirm that the Oct. 15 away game at Michigan was also selected by FOX and is on course to be a noon ET kickoff.

Wow. I'm surprised. When was the last time Ohio State didn't play in State College at night?
2001 was a day game.
I know 2003 was a night game.
I know 2005 was a night game.
I know 2007 was a night game.
I know 2009 was an afternoon game.
2012 - was that a night game or a late afternoon game?
2014 was definitely a night game.
2016 was definitely a night game.
2018 was definitely a night game.
2020... I'm pretty sure that this was a night game.

That poor mod has obviously been duped into thinking that network time slots are the reason for the noon kickoff and not the B1G conspiracy to screw over Penn State which, as we all know, is the real reason here.

You may be right that they'll accuse the Big Ten of screwing them out of "TEH GREETEST ATMOSPHERE IN ALL OF SPORTS!!!111!!!" It'll be even funnier now that I have pointed out that the last 9 games Ohio State played at Penn State were under the lights.

I could have sworn that I saw it posted somewhere on BP today that it's almost assuredly going to be a noon game this year. But I don't see it.
However, that news made it over to Nittany Lounge.

ESPN/ABC released a list of their big primetime games for 2022, and Penn State-Ohio State isn’t on there
FOX likes their biggest games to kick off at noon. The Whiteout might have to follow suit…

Welp, won't be going to that one....zzzzzz
Ha - "I only go to white outs at night!"

Sorry but PSU has to grow a set and say all our designated White Outs to be played at night. Play the game at night and shove the TV up your A--.

If the OSU and MIch game is always set at noon, then that's our deal too.

I will say the White Out is feared by Mich and OSU for reasons including recruiting, loudness, and mostly a loss.
Yeah - "We scheduled all of our fans to dress the same and we require this to be a night game for that. Otherwise, we just look like a bunch of fans who insisted we all dress the same that day."

He does bring up a good point, though. Not his third point - I think it's well-documented that Ohio State has done pretty well in white outs. (Wins in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2018, and losses in 2005 and 2016.) I mean his second point. If The Game can dictate what time it starts, then Penn State should be allowed to choose what time they want to start, right? I mean, it's the same. Right? Right?

In case no one can hear my sarcasm, let me be clear: "The Game is THE GAME. White outs are not. White outs are only slightly more of a tradition than "The Rail" is, and almost as lame. Show me 100 years of "because I couldn't go for 3" and the stupid M-Club banner and Boston vs. Woodson and hissy fits when JT gets a first down. Show me a coach who refuses to buy gas in the other state, or refusal to say the other team's name. Show me a campus where the students block out the letters corresponding to the other team's name. Show me where the conference athletic directors had to get together and decide which coach they wanted to piss off more. Penn State, you are not a part of The Game, and no game you have can compare. Get back in your chair before you find out there is no more chair for you, anymore."

What's the saying? "Born on third and he thinks he hit a triple." Penn State got a triple against little leaguers, came to the Big Ten, and has somehow gone backward to first base, and all they can do is expect more triples.
They came into the conference thinking they'd steamroll every year. Now, almost 30 years later, they have 4 championships. 4 in 29 years. That's good for 4th place, behind Wisconsin (6), *ichigan (6), and Ohio State (15). And overall win percentage since 1993? Also 4th, behind the same 3 teams.

So... yeah. All that to say that your white out has about as much power to control the start time as the San Diego Chicken does.

Some rational dudes, but there are also some who still insist that Penn State is the holy grail of the Big Ten.

Pretty much any time OSU comes to PSU, it's at night. When we go to OSU, it's often an afternoon kick. We don't really have much leverage to demand that we get a night game when OSU comes here but we then play at noon or 3:30 in Columbus.

If our crowd can't get off its ass and make a difference at noon or 3:30, then we have nobody to blame but ourselves.
OSU/UM get away with dictating both the date and kickoff time for their game every year. Our AD dictating the time of the whiteout isn’t that out of line.
That's a case where both schools play at noon each year. If PSU struck a deal with either OSU or Michigan to where both sides would host night games each year, I think that would be reasonable. But it has to go both ways. When was the last time we played @ Michigan at night?
We always will be the underdog vs. OSU.

I'm not for boot licking the Big Ten, bad enough we've started our seasons against a Big opponent on the road, played Iowa umteen times in the last 15 years, and put up with BS calls.

No screw it i'm standing firm on this issue.
Oh - You're standing firm on this issue. Well, Damn. Sorry Fox Sports, you can't do what's best for your business without getting it approved by "Hazelton Lion".
agree to disagree. It has nothing to do with osu. Osu isn’t always the whiteout game. Neither is Michigan. Last year it was Auburn and the Michigan game was an early kick. If osu doesn’t want to be the white out game they should start sucking.

If the AD wants to push that the whiteout always be under the lights the precedent is already set that schools can dictate.
Who cares what time or place it is played, just beat OSU. Now that it looks like there doing away with divisions- PSU would likely have to beat OSU twice in one year to win the BIG10 and PSU has only beaten OSU One time in Franklin's 8 years.

I want to see Fox Sports and the Big Ten say it's a noon game, but Penn State refuse to play. Ohio State will show up, and have a glorified practice in Beaver Stadium, with a forfeited win. Televise that. Then televise Franklin's insistence that he told everyone it was an 8:00 game. I want to see Franklin ask for Ohio State to forfeit, since they left town before the game started. Ha.

I still find it hard to believe that this is going to be a noon game. You don't think Fox would be celebrating with circle-jerks to be able to televise the white out at night? Does Fox already have something going on that night? Hm... maybe World Series..? Okay - maybe that would push the game to noon.

Not much of a baseball fan, so I had to look it up. Last year's world series was October 26 - November 2. Would they play the baseball game at noon? Or is there a chance that the Saturday is a bye day?
