Game Thread tOSU at Penn State, Sat. Nov. 2, 12pm ET, FOX

College football surprise teams in 2024: Biggest sleeper in SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big 12

These teams are poised to catch the nation by surprise this fall.

BIG TEN: PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS

12386899.JPG

If the offensive coordinator switch that brought Andy Kotelnicki to Penn State helps Drew Allar reach the potential that made him the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, Penn State is a legitimate College Football Playoff contender. James Franklin's teams consistently play good defense but have recently lacked the explosive playmaking needed to win at college football's highest level. Penn State ranked No. 84 in the nation in passing yards per attempt (6.7) in 2023. That number needs to improve in 2024.

Pate: "Penn State is tied for the third-best odds to win the conference. This is all dependent on what Andy Kotelnicki does. He specializes in explosive pass and run games. Big chunk plays were the absolute last thing Penn State was known for last year. They can be really good defensively under Tom Allen. They went to great lengths to bolster their corner room. They lost really good talent, but they added really good talent. I'm confident in them. They're floating just outside high-end status in college football. If the addition of Kotelnicki is the spark, they could win the Big Ten."

Ohio State football team won't have to deal with a white-out this season

Instead of having their white-out game against Ohio State, Penn State has announced that game will take place against Washington this year. That means that the game against the Buckeyes more than likely won't be a night game. In fact, it will most likely be a noon game now.

This is a game that could be a Big Noon Kickoff game. FOX loves having its best matchups on at noon, and a lot of those matchups include the Buckeyes. This makes the game a lot easier for Ohio State to play. A night game would have been a lot tougher to play.

We won't know the official time of the game for some time. The Big Ten likes to wait until the week prior to make announcements of some of the game times. Most of Ohio State's kickoff times have yet to be announced.

I think it's the other way around. Penn State feels that their game against Ohio State will likely be a noon game, so they picked another game to be their white-out game.
A lot of their posters are crying about this, saying that they should tell the Big Ten and Fox to stuff it and play the game at night, anyway. I'd love to see them try that.
Also, I'm still not convinced that the white-out game gives them much more of an advantage that any other game would be.

ThisThisThis

The article fatuously states “a night game would have been a lot tougher”

No

Playing the same opponent at a different time of day? That might be a little tougher. How many points do you think Vegas moves the line by if kickoff is moved to 8pm? Now how many points does the line move by if the opponent is changed to Georgia? Whatever that number is; that’s how you define a LOT tougher. Same opponent in the dark? Stick the hyperbole into the next whiteout, or into some other thing where the sun doesn’t shine

We’re gonna wear gold helmets and green jerseys. That’ll stop Ohio State dead in their tracks.

Tell that to 2005 Ohio State
Buckeyes lost by 7, if I remember correctly, on the road, to a team that won a BCS bowl game. The crowd noise may have been (and probably was) a factor. I just don't think I believe that the fact that they all choose to wear the same color affects the outcome of the game. It is probably fun to enjoy the herd mentality, and it probably makes it a fun time for the crowd, but I doubt that the visiting team cares, unless they let it get into their head.
Same answer for 2016 Ohio State.
And 2012, 2014, and 2018 (all Ohio State wins).

They were coming off of a 3 win (i think) season, and we had just gone toe to toe with eventual NC Texas........a game we should have won. At the time of our game, they were still a joke despite being 5-0. But for some reason, their stadium was insane. Those people......as stupid as they are.....fully expected to beat us that night, and they are probably confused as to why they didn't beat us by more. They had no business being on the same field as Ohio State.

Don't give me that nonsense about winning a BCS bowl, either. At that point, that Florida St team they beat was one of the weakest BCS teams ever. 2005 Penn State is revered by Penn State fans as to when they were "back".....but that's a wildly overrated team if you look at it in the context of an unbiased person who absolutely despises anything Penn St related.

Troy took $500 at a time when it was against the rules

OSU self reported and he sat for the UT game. If Troy had played…. Who knows

But Troy would’ve had that game under his belt before going to slappy valley

That, in my opinion, would’ve made a big difference

That Texas game is still one of the most frustrating games I've ever watched. So many missed chances, we coulda easily won that game but kept stalling and settling for FGs which kept Texas in it and allowed them to win at the end.

Troy played......just not the full game. Such a gut punch. Thanks to whoever brought that game up to make me go back and remember all the chances we blew.
