? The meaning or the reason behind THE in tOSU....

Actual name of the college......proper english......

I heard that an English teacher at Ohio State decided that it was proper English, so it might not be universally accepted as "proper"... just what I heard. I don't know nearly enough about language to have an opinion about it.

Either way, it sets The Ohio State University apart.

interesting that the thing that shouldn't set it apart does.

I have heard that one of the issues is that OSU used to be referred to as Ohio by many people (look at old video footage where the scoreboard says Ohio at the Show), OU did not like this and threatened to sue, but that the suit never happened because OSU chose a new logo in the 80s that emphasized the The

I believe that the new logo is the real reason though...the old one was ugly text that just said OSU, it was very dated looking

Retards here in Penn State country still call us Ohio. They try to talk smack to me and I tell them I don't care about MAC teams. They don't get it.

That is incorrect: OSU has been The Ohio State University since the 1800s. It is simply part of the university's official full name, but it has been emphasized as "THE" since players on televised football games started doing so.

"Classes began at the new college on September 17, 1873. Twenty-four students met at the old Neil farm just two miles north of Columbus. In 1878 the college's name was changed to The Ohio State University. In that same year the first class of six men graduated, and in 1879, the university graduated its first woman."

I would from now on like to be addressed as "The Thump."

That reminds me of the guy on the ESPN commercials for fantasy hockey, I think. "The Rick." What a doof.

I heard there was a lawsuit over the "O" hats that Woody made famous. Ohio U sued over its use. Something like Ohio U didn't want Ohio State to use it, and the other way around, too. I think it was decided that both could use it.

The first I heard it being emphasized was on Monday Night Football, when an ex-OSU player (I forget who) emphasized it. Since then, I've heard it several times on TV. Until then, I'd always heard it as "Ohio State University."

I've been told that the official name is, and always has been, "The Ohio State University."

anyone have FACTS or links that describe the reason it is EMPHASIZED and/or when it started.

I've heard numerous things... a lawsuit....state differentiation....etc
Not sure when or why it started but "The" in front of Ohio State University was commonly used in print and the spoken form when I started school there in 1973. I had always heard it spoken that way and seen it in print. I presume it predates the 1973 date as a common usage. Knowing that, it kind of made me chuckle when it started to show up during Monday Night Football player intro's and some of the announcers made comments on it several years back as if it were something new. Maybe it fell out of use sometime between my day and now, but I have always used the "The".

Funny. Next time you hear that, say something like, "Yeah? Well I hate Penn just as badly, shitface." They probably still won't get it.
Oh trust me, I do. They don't get it. They tell me that they are Penn State, not Penn.....then look at me like I'm the dumbass.
