TCU alumni fire back at Buckeyes with billboards

By Mike Piellucci
FOXSportsSouthwest.com

It's been said that he who laughs last laughs loudest. It's only fitting, then, that TCU's glee can be heard - and seen - all the way in Columbus.

According to a report on Dallas radio station 1310 The Ticket, a group of TCU alumni created a fund to purchase eight electronic billboards near Ohio State's campus in Columbus, Ohio to celebrate the Horned Frogs' Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin, as well as needle the Buckeyes.

The billboards are purple with white script and read, "Congratulations to TCU for their BCS Rose Bowl Victory - Little Sisters of the Poor."

The signature line is a reference to OSU president E. Gordon Gee, who memorably proclaimed on November 24th that the Horned Frogs don't deserve to be in the national title hunt because they played "the Little Sisters of the Poor," unlike the Buckeyes who played what Gee termed "a murderer's row" of teams in the Big Ten.

Maybe Gee should not have said what he said, or at least worded it differently. But just because TCU beat Bucky, does not make what he said wrong. I know that the Big Least is not a very strong conference, but I think it is tougher than the one TCU leaves. They will be challenged week in and out, and have to show up, or get beat.

South Florida, Pitt, Louisville and West Virginia, (sometimes even Fredo) will be more talented opponents than what TCU faced on a usual basis. There is also some pretty good coaching in the Big Least.

That said, I think TCU will be the cream of the crop (maybe should say crap) and the other teams will have to step up their games to sniff the BCS

How much did this cost the TCU fans who did this? I wonder if it's really worth it.

Also, maybe I'm wrong, but Gee's comments were about the national championship game, weren't they? Not about the other BCS bowl games. So.. yeah.. congratulations to TCU for making it to (and winning) a game that had nothing to do with what Gee was saying.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's win Saturday sent the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl. If their schedule this season had worked out differently, the Buckeyes' win may also have sent Texas Christian to the national title game.
In late December of 2007, Ohio State said it had reached a deal to open the 2009 season at home against TCU. Army had recently backed out of a planned series, and the Horned Frogs, coming off an 8-5 season, were set for a one-game trip to Columbus. According to Ohio State, the game had been agreed to but the contract wasn't yet signed.

<snip>

And TCU had that chance with the Buckeyes.
"I'd say Ohio State really wanted it," TCU associate athletic director Jack Hesselbrock, who handles the Horned Frogs' football scheduling, said last week. "They had an opening and needed an opponent, and I think the fans would have liked it and been intrigued by it."
Hesselbrock said TCU was about 50-50 on taking the game, but certainly talked it over. There were some logistical problems. Virginia was already scheduled for the season opener and according to Hesselbrock, it would not have been easy to shift that game. Also, with TCU's growing success, the Horned Frogs were looking to get away from taking paydays to serve as opponents for BCS schools, as they did with losses to Texas in 2007 and Oklahoma in 2008.
So while they liked the idea of playing Ohio State for the first time since 1973, the program was hoping to move beyond that.
"And Ohio State was not interested in a return here for obvious reasons," Hesselbrock said.

Suck on that LSoP alumni.

i think that if tcu really wanted to sack up, they would schedule osu. knock it off with this middle school girl crap and go up against each other one on one. you want compete on the national level? hang with the big boys week in and week out and not hide in the big east.

Either TCU or Utah have played in a BCS bowls in each of the past three seasons.

After moving to the Big East & Pac 12 they won't won't match that total (3 BCS bowls combined) over the next five seasons.

Book it.

i totally agree about utah and pac 10. however, i disagree with your take on tcu in the big east, i think that they will be the best team in the conference the second the season starts. who else is there that is better? uconn? pitt?

Seems like they would be...they'll have some pretty hefty road trips (with time changes and what not) Might take it's toll at some point

Big East membership... TCU wears it well.

If you have to put up a billboard to make your argument, you've already lost.
