While the football game against Northern Illinois was ugly, The Ohio State University Marching Band proved that the one thing you can always count on at Ohio Stadium is a great performance by the band. After sharing the field with the marching band alumni last week, the spotlight was solely on TBDBITL this week and they shown in a one week show that should draw lots of attention.
Pregame opened with the traditional ramp entrance and was followed by the band marching band up the field while playing the Northern Illinois fight song. Up next was a double Script Ohio; the decision as to whether a single or double Script will be performed is made before the season and determined based on the number 4th year sousaphones players that are in the band as there needs to be enough Scripts for all of them to get a chance to dot the i. The OSUMB features 225 members of which 192 are regulars and the rest are alternates. Normally only the regulars perform but a double Script Ohio requires 224 people so all but one of the alternates perform; you can see the alternates march on from the sideline as the band goes into the Script block. One alternate does not perform in the double Script and this is due to the need for an even number of musicians; the non-performing alternate is one of the percussion alternates and the person who sits out rotates each time there is a double Script.
After Script, the band led the crowd in singing “Carmen Ohio”. Following Carmen, the alternates marched off the field while the band went into their Diamond Ohio tunnel formation. Pregame concluded with the “Star Spangled Banner” which the band plays from a formation of the American flag, at the end the band marches in order to make the flag wave.
This week’s halftime show was dedicated to the longest running movie franchise ever, James Bond. The band opened with the familiar James Bond theme while spelling out ‘Bond’ and then forming the 007 logo for the franchise. The crowd was then treated to an animated Bond taking aim and firing at a target on the field; you can clearly here the expressions of surprise at the gunshot from some in the crowd. The band then segued into the theme from Skyfall that concluded with a giant martini glass on the field. Up next was the theme from “Goldinger” and for the first time we rooted for a Bond villain as Oddjob used his trusty hat to destroy a block M. The band performed a drill featuring rotating blocks and circles before appropriately transforming into a spinning roulette wheel for “You Know My Name” from Casino Royale.
No Bond film is complete without a car chase and TBDBITL happily obliged. After a bit of more contemporary style drill to “Nobody Does It Better”, the band formed a pair of cars for the big chase scene set to “Live and Let Die”. Of course our hero survived the chase by hitting a ramp and performing a jump while the villain crashed. The show concluded with the familiar image of looking at Bond down a gun barrel.
Featuring several of the animated formations that the band has become famous for as well as well-arranged and performed music, the OSUMB clearly showed that Nobody Does it Better.
Last week we reported on the death of former OSUMB director Dr. Jon Woods who passed away last Saturday morning. Dr. Woods’ passing hit the band family hard as he had a major role in making the band what it is today and he impacted the lives of thousands of band members over the years. This Sunday, family and friends said goodbye to Dr. Woods at a memorial service held in St. John Arena. The marching band was in attendance and performed “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” (better known as the Navy Hymn) which had become a tradition at Skull Session under Dr. Woods, “Salvation is Created” which was a personal favorite of his, and of course “Carmen Ohio”. The service also included words from Dr. Woods’ son and daughter and former directors Dr. Paul Droste and Jon Waters. Mr. Waters summed up the feelings of many in attendance as he said “Remembering the man, the friend and the leader who gave so much of his time and his talent, who now leaves behind a spectacular legacy….I have no words but ‘Thank you,’ Thank you for allowing Jon Woods to be a father to me and a father to so many.”
