The Ohio State University Marching Band hit the road this past weekend but they didn’t go to Rutgers with the football team, instead they went a bit farther to London, England. For the past several years the NFL has been holding regular season football games in London in an effort to increase the popularity of the sport there. Thanks to the fame that the OSUMB has gained in recent years, the NFL invited them to perform at this past Sunday’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars played in Wembley Stadium; the NFL paid for the trip as well.

After departing Columbus on Thursday, the band arrived in London on Friday and had some time to see some of the sights of the famous city. Saturday the band got back to work, performing in a parade down Regent Street as part of the NFL’s festivities leading up to the game. Following the parade, the band had one last rehearsal before their big performance on Suday.

Those in attendance at the Penn State game got a preview of the British themed show that the band had put together just for the trip. After opening with the NFL logo, TBDBITL wasted no time in showing the sights of London, forming the famous Elizabeth Tower clock, more commonly referred to as Big Ben even though that is actually the name of the bell in the clock tower, complete with working hands. The band then saluted British rock with The Who’s “My Generation” complete with a singer and microphone stand. Up next was the Rolling Stone’s “Satisfaction” which saw TBDBITL make the iconic Rolling Stones logo and a guitar. Of course no British themed show would be complete without a salute to the Beatles which featured an animated double decker bus and the Fab Four strolling across Abbey Road. The band concluded the British portion of the show with an animated London Eye, the big ferris wheel along the river, and a salute to the queen with “God Save the Queen” that ended with the band forming the Tower Bridge. Of course the OSUMB had to bring a bit of America to London and they concluded their show with a double Script Ohio.

This was the first performance by a college marching band at an NFL game in London and it’s safe to say that they impressed everyone in attendance. Watching the video you can easily hear the crowd reaction to the band’s animated and picture formations. Perhaps the best testament to the skill of the band came during the double Script when you can easily hear the crowd’s amazement at the crossovers in the ‘O’ and the ‘h’. OSU fans are constantly impressed by the band’s big animated formations and of course love Script Ohio but in many ways they take things like the crossovers in Script for granted because they have become so used to seeing them; hearing the reaction from people who’ve never seen the band before shows just how impressive the band’s performances really are.

The band, like the football team, will have a weekend off for Halloween but they won’t be resting on their laurels. Only about 12 hours after returning to Columbus very early Monday morning, the band was at practice, working on their show for the upcoming Minnesota game. I can’t wait to see what they band has in store but knowing the arranger for the upcoming show, I can say it will be spectacular. At the same time, while we wait to be impressed by the band at halftime, let’s all try to watch their performance as if it were the first time we have seen them and truly appreciate all the little things that we normally take for granted that come together to truly make the OSUMB They Best Damn Band In The Land.
