Following their highly successful trip to London that drew raves from the Brits, The Ohio State University Marching Band got right back to work preparing for their next show. The football team’s bye over Halloween weekend meant that the band had extra time to prepare for this past weekend’s show. Having two weeks to prepare for a show isn’t a common thing with OSU’s football schedule and the band took full advantage of it, putting together a show for the ages.

The band got things started with their traditional pregame show, opening with the Ramp Entrance before marching back down the field and forming an ‘M’ while playing the Minnesota fight song. The salute to the opponent over, it was right into Script Ohio. Just as the football team honors its senior players every year, the band takes time during pregame to honor those members who are marching their final season; because of the football players being honored at the final home game, the marching band honors their members earlier. After spelling out ‘OSUMB’, the entire band knelt and then the non-returning members stood as their names were raised. After the departing band members were honored, the crowd joined the band in “Carmen Ohio”. Pregame concluded with the standard tunnel sequence, team entrance, and the national anthem; this time the band was joined on the field for the national anthem by ROTC members holding a large flag in the north endzone.

Unless you live under a rock, you probably saw some of the numerous mentions to October 21st being “Back to the Future Day”, the date in the future that Marty McFly and Doc traveled to in Back to The Future 2. Numerous companies paid tribute to the films on that day and this past Saturday the OSUMB paid its own tribute to the music of those films. As the opening notes to the movies’ score sounded, the band spelled out the franchise name in the font that was used on the movie posters. The band then quickly began its own journey back to the future, forming a DeLorean which, with the help of some pyrotechnics, reached the necessary 88 miles per hour. After traveling back in time to 1955, we were treated to “Go Johnny Go” complete with Marty rocking out on guitar. The band then recreated the famous scene of Marty riding a skateboard while hanging onto the back of a truck while playing “The Power of Love”. The band recreated other visuals from the movie including the clock tower and a return of the DeLoreon, this time the flying version from the end of the third movie.

Halftime concluded with a celebration of Brutus’s 50th birthday and the band made sure the beloved mascot got an appropriately-sized cake.

Night games tend to lead to special halftime shows from the marching band and this was certainly one of those. The theme was timely, tapping into nostalgia for a popular series of music. The music was arranged by John Brennan who quickly has established himself among TBDBITL’s stable of arrangers and has been responsible for some of the band’s most popular shows including the video game show that started the band’s current upswing in fame and last year’s outer space themed show. Brennan’s arrangements do a good job of properly representing popular music while keeping in mind the OSUMB’s unique sound and the need to keep the music interesting and challenging for the band members. Of course music is only part of the show and needs to be accompanied by appropriate drill. This week’s drill was a great combination of the animated picture formations that the band is known for and some line and block drill that demonstrated the precision of the band; the pyrotechnics were a nice touch as well.

This week is the band’s annual Hometown Concert which will be at the Schottenstein Center on Thursday at 7:30pm. Tickets are either $15 or $25 and can be purchased through the band’s website. The concert is a great way to hear the band’s full season of music including a preview of the show for the Michigan State game.
