Experience & Accomplishments Began his coaching career as an assistant under Lute Olsen At Arizona. Prior to Olson’s retirement, he left to serve as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Memphis during the 2008-2009 season. He then replaced John Calipari following that season.
Program History The predecessor of the University of Memphis, West Tennessee State Normal School, first fielded a basketball team in 1920. Zach Curlin began coaching the team in 1924. The Tigers joined the Mississippi Valley Conference[disambiguation needed] in 1928. The team played its early home poines a local high school gym, a local YMCA, and in a room on campus called the “Normal Cage” which allowed only six inches from the court lines to the walls. In 1929, a $100,000 facility on campus named Memorial Gym became the Tigers’ home

The Match-Up

The Memphis Tigers and the Ohio State Buckeyes have one thing in common, they both lost to UT-Arlington. Yes, you just read that right. After beating the Buckeyes on their home court, UT-A traveled a little south and upset Memphis on their home court by a final score of 68-64.

The Tigers and the Buckeyes are taking part in the Hall Of Fame Invitational along with Grambling State, UT-Arlington and Louisiana Tech with those match-ups being campus rounds and the tigers and Buckeyes finish it up in Miami, FL.

Both teams blew out Grambling State and lost to UT-Arlington, so far. Memphis doesn’t play Louisiana Tech until December 1st at home, so we have to wait until then to see how they fare over-all. One thing is clear at this time, UT-Arlington is the best team in this half of the Invitational.

Buckeyes and Tigers

Marc Loving 16.5 ppg, Keita Bates-Diop 13.0 ppg and, Jae’Sean Tate 10.5 ppg are the only players averaging double figures through four games. There is plenty of potential for the rest of the gang to get into the mix as this team grows and improves. Look for JaQuan Lyle and Daniel Giddens to get their averages up as their playing time increases.

The Tigers are led by Ricky Tarrant Jr 21.0, ppg, Dedric Lawson 14.8 ppg and Trahson Burrell 10.0 ppg. They have team mates that do well to play the uptempo pace that Head Coach Josh Pastner loves to play. Shaq Goodwin and Avery Woodson have been coming on recently and will be a challenge to guard.

Prediction

The Buckeyes need to control the tempo of the game and try and beat the Tigers at their own game. Pastner loves to push it up the court with the similar type of game that La Tech did against Ohio State. Coach Thad Matta has been trying to let his youngsters play and develop at the same time. This will be a challenge for Thad.

We shall see if they are up for the task Friday evening. I think the Buckeyes have a chance to win this game but will fall short in the end due to the inexperience factor.

Score: 74-63 Tigers
