(Thad should be smiling!)
The Buckeyes rebounded on their 4-game skid by beating VMI 89-62 Saturday afternoon at VCA. In my preview I foresaw a Buckeyes victory – even quoting … “They will score a ton.” Is 89 a ton? I guess I have to say it is. I was thinking more of 90-plus, but at 89 we are simply debating semantics.
THE BUCKEYES:
Jae’Sean Tate would lead the Buckeyes with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, junior forward Marc Loving logged his second career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kieta Bates-Diop would add 12 points. Sophomore transfer – 7-footer- Trevor Thompson would deliver a double-double as well with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Coming into this game the Buckeyes were dead last in the Big 10 in free-throw shooting at 59%. That will raise as the Buckeyes today were 78.5% from the line.
In the first half the Keydets gave the Buckeyes a run for their money. At the 12:26 point Adrian Rich hit a 3 from the left side perimeter. Within moments of that QJ Peterson nailed one from the right at the 11:59 point. This suddenly made the score 19-17.
The half-time score would be 42-31. This is largely on second offensive rebounds, 6, that turned into baskets.
The second half the Buckeyes stepped up and delivered as “they were supposed to”. They would hit 48.6% Total FG shooting. From the 3-point range they would be successful 33.3% of the time. And from the free-throw line they would be 90.0 %. This added to the climb to victory they needed.
THE KEYDETS:
QJ Peterson would lead VMI with 23 points. Tim Marshall and Julian Eleby would add 12 and 11, respectively.
Even with their heroic run in the first, the Keydets never got closer than 10 points in the second half. The Keydets with no player over 6’6” was in fact worn out by the dominance of the Buckeyes bigger and faster team.
Coming into this game with my preview – in evaluation – I quickly became a QJ Peterson fan. He showed his worth today. But in this game, watching, I am now a Trey Chapman fan too who would have 9 points and 4 rebounds. I know the numbers aren’t big but they were at crucial moments and displayed heart in each event.
SUMMATION:
The Buckeyes needed this victory. After a 4-game skid the confidence certainly was down. It isn’t always losses to “bigger” and “better” teams that are detrimental, oddly they “may” be expected. Losses to teams that may not have been expected – such as Texas-Arlington & Louisiana Tech. is what deflates a teams’ confidence.
The in-sync-ness is what needed to happen here. The Buckeyes started a tad slow but finished well.
The Buckeyes on Tuesday meet up with the Air Force Academy. Hmmmm! I will get back to you on that.
