This week we welcome our friends from twitter Eric @eafry13, Melissa @buckeyegirl1331, Randy @randycozza , Eric @the_1st_mimzee and Zane @ZEschbaugh10 Please follow them and congratulate them on a job well done!!! How did you feel the offense improved in the game and what was the best play?
COLUMBUS, OH – SEPTEMBER 26: Quarterback Cardale Jones #12 of the Ohio State Buckeyes passes in the third quarter against the Western Michigan Broncos at Ohio Stadium on September 26, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State defeated Western Michigan 38-12. (Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images)
ZEschbaugh10 – From the first snap it was pretty clear that Coach Meyer and his staff worked on simplifying the game plan much like they did in the last three games of last season. They got back to mixing up the outside and inside run with the pass and it worked. Solidifying the starter seemed to comfort Cardale Jones which definitely showed in his play on the field and lead to consistency in the Buckeye offense. The best play of the game in my opinion would be the run that Zeke had where he jumped the W. Michigan defender this really changed the feel in the stadium. This was the best play of the game but it is important to note that the first three plays set the tone for the game.
eafry13 – I thought they did a much better job controlling the line of scrimmage and tempo of the game. Additionally, as Coach Meyer said during the week, we saw them “get back to basics” a little bit more and run the ball more north and south, versus to the perimeter. Overall, I’d say this was a B game for the offense with a solid trend-line up.Although it was early, I think the first TD was the “best” play in that 1) we scored early which was a big confidence booster. Had we languished a quarter or more before scoring, that could have induced panic which leads to errors. Secondly, they scored quickly which shows how dynamic the offense is and the potential it has. Finally, it was a good throw from Cardale. Unfortunately, he reverted back to some of the under-thrown/lofted passes later, but this was a strike and great pitch and catch to open the scoring.
buckeyegirl1331 – The offensive line did a better job blocking and Zeke did a great job finding the holes and occasionally hurdling a defender to get some extra yards. Also it was nice seeing Curtis Samuel get involved, he showed his potential to be an explosive play-maker on this high powered offense.
randycozza – To me the play calling got better as the game went on,and after they stopped trying to find ways to get Braxton the ball so many times. Seems like they spend so much time trying to get him involved. I think getting him the ball should come naturally and in the flow of the game. Seems like they are pressing . Best plays were perimeter runs with the pulling lineman.
the -1st_mimzee – I feel like the offense improved on pushing the ball downfield in week 4. Receivers did a better job of getting downfield and getting open to give Cardale some options to throw. The best play of the game was Cardale’s TD pass to Jalin which was a beautiful toss to a wide open receiver.
At what point in the game did the defense truly get it together, and who made the biggest impact on the day?
ZEschbaugh10 – The turning point on the defensive side of the ball was the play Adolphus Washington took the interception to the end zone for six. He is my Defensive MVP for this week. It is not often in the game of football that a 6’4″ 290 pound lineman takes an interception back to the house while fighting off a block.
eafry13 – There was certainly some bending, but not breaking with the defense this week. Obviously, Washington’s pick 6 was a big boost. However, I think we tightened up after Cardale’s interception/touch-back in the third quarter. After that, the D shut down Western M on each of the next possessions and limited their ability to move. SO, I think the biggest impact play was the Offense turning it over and the D essentially saying, “It’s our turn to finish this.”
Eyes got huge the closer to the endzone he got
buckeyegirl1331 – The Defense truly got it together after the pix six from Adolphus Washington. I think the biggest impact of the day was when Tyvis Powell blocked the kick for a Western Michigan field goal. It fired up the defense and gave them the spark they needed
randycozza – Defense pulled it together in the second half. A. Washington pick six was just unbelievable. D line was unreal made a lot of plays even when getting held almost every play. Vonn Bell and RKWON stood out to me. As a team i saw improvement, offense still not hitting on all cylinders, even though their are flashes of what it could be. I think once the play callers get settled in things will improve just as they did last year once Herman settled in with two changes in QB position. Defense had me wondering with the big holes they were giving up, but as the game wore on defense looked better and better. Once they stopped over pursuing. Still gotta love it when still not playing nowhere near what they are capable of, but still winning.
the -1st_mimzee – I don’t think the defense every got in any sort of rhythm. They struggled to stop the run but they made the stops when they needed to. Special teams had a very good game and made some huge plays. Defense looked okay and made the plays they needed to make. Pass defense continues to look like a strength on this team even though they gave up a couple big plays. Adolphus Washington made a big impact with his big pick six, that was a huge play in the game and gave the whole team some momentum.
How did the team do as a whole and what grade would you give them based on how you “thought” they should have done?
ZEschbaugh10 – The Ohio State Buckeyes are known for dominating in all facets of the game and I think that as team they played very well. The one weakness was probably the number of yards given up on inside run plays. There were a few plays early in the game where the Buckeyes were not in good position to make plays at the line of scrimmage. You have to credit the offensive line of Western Michigan for creating running lanes for Jarvion Franklin and Jamauri Bogan. Overall, I would give the team a “B-“. Special teams played a huge part in paving the way to a win in Columbus. The Buckeyes are currently the number one team in the nation and there potential has not even skimmed the surface to this point. I look forward to the to upcoming games as Coach Meyer and his staff get the Buckeyes ready for Big 10 Conference football.
eafry13 –Overall, I’d give the whole team performance a solid B+. There were mistakes made and the D gave up two touchdowns, however, we saw significant improvement from the offense (even with the 2 picks). But, what I wanted to see, I did. And, that is Ohio State coming out and establishing themselves as the dominant team. Again, there were mistakes and certainly an opportunity to put up 50 if some of the passes weren’t under-thrown, but overall, I felt like this team played like Ohio State for the first time since Virginia Tech. Additionally, since this was a common opponent with Michigan State, I really wanted to see Ohio State beat Western M by more than MSU did, so that was another item I wanted to see – and did.
buckeyegirl1331 – I would give them a C + I thought they under threw a lot of the ball and the defense had trouble stopping the run. We’re seeing glimpses of what this team will be when we begin jelling and are truly 9 units strong
randycozza – I guess I would give them a b minus compared to what I thought the end result would be
the -1st_mimzee – I feel the team as a whole played one of their best complete games of the season (besides Va Tech). The offense looked in sync, defense made the big plays we’ve been accustomed to seeing and special teams played their best game of the year. Considering the way they played the previous two weeks, I would give their grade as a B. They looked to be much improved from weeks 2 & 3.
