It has been a lot of fun putting these together each week, and this group got a pretty good game to discuss. I want to thank my wife Jackie @jlhBUCKS as well as Kevin @Buckeye45, David @ashburnproject, Tas @K4GSG, and Shaun @RealShaunHall for participating this week. Please give them a follow and compliment them on their writings!
It’s been a season where all Cardale has done is win but that doesn’t appear to be enough. What are your thoughts on his appearance and should he keep the starting job? Why or why not?
@jlhBUCKS – I had high hopes for an explosive season this year after everything we accomplished last year. It seems going into games as the underdog last year we shined. This year when we are expected to destroy the teams we have played we have struggled to get the win.
While Cardale was outstanding last year and did everything needed to get that championship there seems to be something missing within him this year. I wasn’t sure who should have been the starter. I felt Cardale deserved a shot after everything he did last year but I was also pulling for JT.
Last year when it was announced that Braxton wouldn’t be playing most people panicked but I had a good feeling about JT. I had that same feeling this year. When he started against Rutgers I saw the team I had been hoping to see all year. I gave an edge to JT as the starter and I think he should have been given the opportunity long before the Rutgers game.
I’m not sure if Cardale is struggling this year because of something within himself, new coaching, or the loss of some key players from last year but I think if the Rutgers game is an indication of what the rest of the season can be like then we need to go with JT!
@Buckeye45 – I love Cardale Jones. I think what he did in the final three games last season is incredible and I really wanted him to carry that momentum into a record breaking 2015 that would ultimately lead to another championship before he left a legend to become the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Unfortunately it hasn’t quite played out like that.
I think there are many different opinions as to why the offense has struggled this year but you cannot deny that it has struggled – the Buckeyes offense is averaging about 60 yards less and scoring a touchdown less per game this season as opposed to last. While I personally think there are many reasons for the drop in production I acknowledge that Cardale Jones just isn’t playing at a championship level right now. I think you have to go with JT Barrett to try to get things back on track for the home stretch.
@ashburnproject – It’s been a season where all Cardale has done is win but that doesn’t appear to be enough. What are your thoughts on his appearance and should he keep the starting job? Why or why not? The offense is very stagnant and predictable under Cardale, whereas with JT, they move quickly and and are much less Vanilla.
Defense strong, offense out of sync. Much more potent with @JT_theQB4th in, give @CJ12_ credit for filling in under duress. #GoBucks
— David Ashburn, M.Ed. (@ashburnproject) November 8, 2015
@K4GSG – I don’t see the “starting job” belonging to anybody accept the person that gives you the best chance at winning that play. I believe JT will take over the first snap of the game and will run most plays. Cardale is the best pocket passer we have, and that is said tongue and cheek, because he is a running nightmare to defend.
Best performance this year and gaining focus on what his job means, next. I’ll give him a B and look for a bit more next time and, yes, there will be more times he plays for the Buckeyes.
@RealShaunHall – Cardale is a competitor, he loves the team, and plays with all heart. However, I have been very displeased with the offense when he is at the helm. In my opinion I believe the offense is extremely predictable when he is the QB. They are not able to open up the full playbook simply because Cardale does not have the accuracy nor the pocket presence needed on pass plays to move the offense at a exceptional rate. Which is why it’s a Run/QB Draw almost every play.
Although he played well against Minnesota, there were and have been way to many opportunities missed, especially in moments that could put OSU up big, and put a needle in the coffin. I don’t have anything against Cardale….hell he brought us a championship against the best of competition . But he also inherited an offensive line that IMO was the best in the country at the end of the year, he also had the best deep threat in college football (Devin Smith) which is why the deep ball was so effective , and he also benefited from Zeke having the postseason one could only dream of.
JT is the captain of this team and I think everybody in America can see this offensive is most feared with JT behind center. And with him playing QB, Ohio State is the best and most talented team in the country.
Been waiting for that. It's about time. JT I can't wait any longer to have you back… #GoBucks

One of the reasons the Silver Bullets nickname came about was that they played a relentless style of defense that rarely let up. What are your thoughts on how they played late Saturday and is it players or coaching/playcalling or just the opponent?
@jlhBUCKS – Our defense has stepped up when they’ve had to and gotten the job done but have been inconsistent throughout games this season. Obviously I don’t know what it’s like to be on the field but I’ve seen too many missed tackles and too many teams throw against us that should give us the opportunity for more interceptions. Against Rutgers I saw them play lights out then against Minnesota we were back to an up and down game. The fourth quarter was a bit scary.
@Buckeye45 – What the Silver Bullets have done well since about the middle of last season is focusing on stopping a key player or players and limiting their contribution. It was a key to the Buckeyes winning the National Championship last year as they slowed down, Melvin Gordon, Amari Cooper, and Marcus Mariota the final three games. I think the Buckeyes went into the Minnesota game with the mindset of shutting down the Gopher running game and did so to the tune of 33 total yards on 26 carries. That is dominating.
When you focus on the run it puts a lot of pressure on the back side to defend the pass and for the most part the Buckeyes did a great job. They allowed some short completions and tackled well. They really only made a few mistakes and the Gophers were able to take advantage of them with three big plays that accounted for about 40% of their total offense. I think the late play on Saturday was just some young player making a mistake that Minnesota took advantage of – I will give the Gophers credit for taking advantage of a few Buckeyes mistakes.
Across the board this version of the Silver Bullets is better than it was last season. In 2014 they ranked 19th in total defense and 26th in scoring defense. This season they rank 13th in total defense and 6th in scoring defense. That is a huge improvement especially considering the offense has dropped in time of possession from 25th in 2014 to 81st this season forcing the defense to be on the field more often.
I think my biggest concern with the Buckeye defense is their Red Zone defense. If you allow a big play that gets a team into the red zone then you hope they would stiffen and force them to attempt a field goal but they don’t do that enough. The Red Zone defense ranks just 40th this season which is still an improvement from 2014 when they ranked 77th.
@ashburnproject – One of the reasons the Silver Bullets nickname came about was that they played a relentless style of defense that rarely let up. What are your thoughts on how they played late Saturday and is it players or coaching/playcalling or just the opponent? They are very aggressive, to a fault at times (opening up the middle for runs)- but they are athletic and play well within the schemes.
@K4GSG – This D is starting to see where they are and are not ready and they are rounding into form. Only give away 14 points and the way they want to help each other is impressive. Still need a few players to learn to use hands and arms in tackles also, sadly. They move well to the ball and are very willing to make a player stop. they make players make a football move before “next” comes and make contact. B also this week and this is a huge Defense that can do this job they just need to do it each week.
@RealShaunHall – Silver Bullets are BACK. I am pleased with the way the defense in the Minnesota game. There were a few broken plays where they gave up big chunks of yardage, but no defense is perfect. I dont think there would be any questions about the defense if the offense was producing at the rate that they shoukd be (vs Rutgers).
I have noticed this defense is playing at a competitive level that I haven’t seen in a while…the secondary is quick, they are hungry, they fear nobody. Again, they give up a big play here and there but everybody does. The linebacker core is IMO the best in the country. And the D-Line? They are out to prove something, Adolphus Washington is on a mission, you pick your poison between Joey Bosa, AW, or Tyquan Lewis (having a blowout year). Now it’s November and I think we will see the buckeye D we all have been accustomed too.
Like I said…SILVER BULLETS ARE BACK!
Give their performance an overall grade and what were the keys to the grade you are giving them.
@jlhBUCKS – The whole team on both sides of the ball seemed to have new life in them. There was a fire and energy I hadn’t seen all year.
@Buckeye45 – We struggled to move the ball against Minnesota and was forced to punt seven times. The Gophers are an underrated defensive team but that output just isn’t acceptable for a top ranked team that has as much talent as the Buckeyes do. The defense played great for a majority of the game but did make the few mistakes and couldn’t keep them out of the end zone when they did get into the red zone as I mentioned above. I would grade the offense at C- and the defense at B, for a total of a C. The Buckeyes were just average Saturday night.
@ashburnproject – Overall the team would get a C+, Defense a solid B, Offense a C-. They will be able to open up the playbook more once Barrett is back and that will re-spark the offense.
@K4GSG – Zeke again shines in his role. Can’t give an A+ but honestly it’s A+ work he is doing.
When did it become bad to “Use the least energy needed to achieve your goal” anyway? I watch a team that is in fact better at everything they are doing then they are doing them weekly. So this an accident or their normal? It is in fact the best way to manage yourself. To stay one level above each threat and not use all the best getting to the dance and having nothing to spend at the dance.
When was it a bad thing to have a race car with 3 great engines vs race cars with maybe one good engine? have I missed the boat or are we really seeing a team that won a championship playing “?!?Next?!?” ball. Just like all day Saturday used to be at full court in C-Bus. Winner runs! Who got next? It’s a B+ performance to stay one step ahead.
@RealShaunHall – I would give the Buckeyes a B- for the game against Minnesota. Again, I was not pleased with the play of the offense at times, but they did just enough to come away with the victory, and came up with a few big plays when they were needed. The defense played a VERY good game IMO. Had they not played so well this could’ve been much closer than a 14 point game due to the lack of offensive productivity. Vonn Bell’s pick 6 was clutch and gave the O breathing room.
What’s your prediction for what they need to do against the Illini to win and what’s the final score?
@jlhBUCKS – I say with Illinois we start JT, explode on offense and defense and have a 49-6 win. This team has a greatness that hasn’t even been seen yet but I think we got a hint of it during the Rutgers game. I love Cardale but I think this is now JT’s time to shine. Let’s Go Bucks!!!!!!!
@Buckeye45 – I think many felt that the offensive performance against Rutgers was a sign of things to come, and hopefully it is, but Rutgers isn’t a very good defensive team. However, like the Gophers, the Illini are an underrated defensive team and will be a good test to see just where we are offensively with JT Barrett (assuming he starts) prior to the stretch run. It could very well be one of those cold and windy games in central Illinois on Saturday and I think the key to the game will be just how well we can run the ball with Barrett under center. I expect the Illini to sell out to stop the run and force Barrett to beat them with his arm.
I expect the Buckeyes to struggle offensively early on Saturday but figure it out as the game goes along while the defense continues to play well.
I see a 35-7 Buckeye victory. 10-0!
@ashburnproject – Predicting a beat down 49-7 Buckeyes
@K4GSG – This week .vs the fighting Illini for Illibuck! Three score plus victory. Performance moves to the A range. J.T. and Cardale get time at QB and the D steps up another notch.
Bucks 38 – No Illi4U 14
@RealShaunHall – Defensively they need to focus on the backfield of Illinois they have very talented backs who can make big plays really quick. Let the D-Line get loose against the Illinois O-line. Silver Bullet mentality. Offensively they need to get Zeke the ball and open up the playbook. Get JT going in the read option to open up the play action . Get the play makers the ball and let them go to work.
