Here are this week’s awards for The Buckeye Battle Cry staff, after a 38-10 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Offensive

tOSU Offensive MVP

JT was the man on Saturday night

MDotySr – JT. Barrett played his arse off and maybe into a new starter!

Joe – J.T. Barrett might have played his most efficient game of his career. That’s saying something.

Ken – JT Barrett. The offense is incredibly efficient, particularly in the RZ when he is QB

Patrick – JT Barrett. No one even close.

Scott – JT Barrett saved the day.

JC – JT – period!

WVa – JT Barrett looked like the JT that starred last season and maybe that’s why he stayed in the game. When you have the hot hand, that’s what you stay in.

JT is unanimous this week and probably for weeks to come!

tOSU O-line MVP

MDotySr – I have to with Pat Elflein who may just be the Buckeyes best OL.

Joe – The whole right side of the line gave Barrett and Elliott enough wiggle room to create big plays.

Ken – I’ll split my vote between Pat Elflein and Chase Farris. They created a lot of creases and gaps Saturday night.

Patrick – Taylor Decker played like an NFL tackle.

Scott – I’ll go with Pat Elflein. No particular reason.

JC – I loved the openings provide by Elflein & Farris. Enough room to roam!

WVa – Pat Elflein is making a case for being an all-American and a possible first round pick. The most consistent lineman on the team.

Elflein get’s the props yet again!

tOSU Offensive Top Play

After the jump pass TD

MDotySr – The initial JT touchdown run of 5 yards. Seem to wake the troops.

Joe – Ezekiel Elliott’s 10 yard touchdown run. It set the tone for the rest of the night

Ken – JT’s jump-pass TD to Braxton. It was vintage Urban and pretty much salted away the game for the Buckeyes.

Patrick – JT’s first TD. Got the offense going.

Scott – The Kriss Kross jump pass. The daddy Mack.

JC – I agree with Ken. The perfection of the Tebow jump pass by JT. I loved it.

WVa – I have to go with Ezekiel’s TD that had shades of Hyde’s bump back and dive TD two years ago. Kid shows some great speed on the edge and it didn’t matter what angle PSU had on it.

It’s not an easy choice this week with all of the great plays that happened.

tOSU Offensive Unsung

MDotySr – Braxton Miller, notice his downfield blocking has improved greatly.

Joe – NIck Vannett and Marcus Baugh. Both blocked extremely well at times, especially once JT came into the ballgame and the read option became priority

Ken – Zeke. Yes, he had a lot of rushing yards, but his block on PSU’s defensive end to give JT the corner on his 2nd TD run in 2nd Qtr was a thing of beauty.

Patrick – the TE’s. Both blocked extremely well for the first time all season.

Scott – Braxton Miller. Gave Urbs another legit weapon Saturday.

JC- Braxton Miller. With the “savior” role bestowed up JT … Braxton was – well – “expected” to do as he does. But Braxton by far was the unsung hero as I see it.

WVa – The TE’s Baugh and Vannett were true to form and don’t appear to get enough credit for it.

Braxton Miller wins a close one here.

Defensive

tOSU Defensive MVP

MDotySr – Joey Bosa – It was like he was Black Ops and his mission was to destroy the enemy.

Joe – Adolphus Washington’s interior play forced Penn State to abandon the inside run game at times. Unbelievable performance.

Ken – Joey Bosa. He was a Force of Nature; 7 tackles, 3 TFL’s (incl 1 sack) He was unblockable

Patrick – Adolphus Washington. Just give him a tree in Buckeye Grove now.

Scott – Bosa was in Beast Mode.

JC – Von Bell. I love this kid’s play.

WVa – Bosa really returned to true form and took care of business early and often. Was the difference maker on third down and a couple fourth downs.

Joey Bosa might need this award named after him.

tOSU D-line MVP

MDotySr – Bosa…see above

Joe – Washingon single handedly changed Penn State’s offensive gameplan. The Diesel has landed folks.

Ken – A-Wash. He “only” had 3 tackles, but 2 were sacks and he shook the ball loose on a strip sack. PSU had trouble blocking him, too.

Patrick – See above

Scott – Bosa again.

JC – Washington is a “quiet” force.

WVa – No need to discuss it . . , Bosa

Bosa get’s mentions abound this week!

tOSU Defensive Top Play

MDotySr – The first non-sack and heavy pressure by Bosa set the tone for things to come.

Joe – The first and 10 sack in the third from Adolphus that took the sails out of a team that had just scored to cut the lead to 12.

Ken – Bosa’s sack with about 4 minutes remaining in the 1st qtr. It forced a (short) PSU punt, OSU would take the lead for good on its ensuing series.

Patrick – not sure one in particular, I guess the constant pressure on Hack.

Scott – not sure who did it but it was the sack that injured Hack. Effectively took him out of the game.

JC – Washington’s sack in 3rd realigned the Nittany Lions and put the course for The Buckeyes to the path it took.

WVa – Going to agree with Scott here, cannot remember who made the play but Hackenburg came out limping after the play.

Have to go with all of the big plays made by the Silver Bullets against the pass game.

tOSU Defensive Unsung

MDotySr – Gareon Conley who may turn out to be the best DB on this team.

Joe – Gareon Conley. Yes a personal foul penalty and got tripped up on a big pass play but he blanketed PSU’s receivers all night long.

Ken – Tommy Schutt – He was credited for only 2 tackles, but one of them was a 4th down sack in the RZ to keep PSU 2 TD’s down.

Patrick – Tommy Schutt. Finally played at the level most expected when he got here.

Scott – Tommy Schutt. See above.

JC – Again Von Bell. I enjoy watching him. He delivers.

WVa – Gareon Conley is going unnoticed. Whish is sad because save for a bad call against him on a play out of bounds he played at a high level.

Tommy Schutt is beginning to get noticed by the gang.

Odds and Ends

tOSU Special Teams MVP

The Aussie helped keep this guy in check

MDotySr – Cam….like most weeks.

Joe – Cam single handedly kept Saquon Barkley out of the endzone with his pinning of the football.

Ken – And, “The Cam Johnston Award” goes to… Cam Johnston.

Patrick – Cam

Scott – Cam Cam, can can.

JC – Cam …. who else could it be?

WVa – Hoping that the Buckeyes run a trick punt, just once so that the Aussie can add a TD to his resume.

Cam the man

tOSU Needs Improvement

MDotySr – Gap control, gap control, gap control.

Joe – I’m with Ken. Four first downs off penalties. That’s half the amount Penn State got with their potent running game.

Ken – Less personal foul penalties.

Patrick – Dontre Wilson

Scott – tackling.

JC – the Def., back needs to relax on the penalties.

WVa – I am going against the grain here, Chase Farris had a few break-downs in the game that really prevented Cardale from getting things going standing in the pocket. He seems to be great for JT though as he is on the run more. Needs improvement in pass blocking for sure.

A mixed bag here every week with what needs improvement.

Penn State MVP

MDotySr – Saquon Barkley was outstanding.

Joe – Saquon Barkley without a doubt. He was the only offensive threat and the only true weapon for Penn State

Patrick – Saquon Barkley. Holy freshman running back batman.

Scott – Penn State MVP is, well, screw it. Nobody.

JC – Barkley. He was the only deliverer offensively.

WVa – Saquon Barkley had the type of game that backs don’t typically have against the Buckeyes. Buckeyes contain the Hack but not the running game as a whole.

Saquon Barkley is the easy choice here.

B1G Coach MVP

MDotySr – Mark Dantonio and his never give up interview!

Joe – Jim Harbaugh, for making my weekend that much better by deciding to punt.

Ken – Mike Riley. Nebraska had a big enough of a lead to not lose on the last play of the game

Patrick – Mark Dantonio. Didn’t let his team quit and pulled out an amazing victory.

Scott – Urban Meyer. Finally realizing JT is the man.

JC – I love Joe’s response. Ditto!

WVa – Urban Meyer because he is slowly putting the pieces together and making it happen by having the team figure some things out for themselves.

No easy choice here and Ferentz isn’t here for the first time.
