Not it! Mass. elementary school bans tag 20 minutes ago

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer (yeah, until his ass is beaten up on a regular basis in junior high :slappy:) because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

Are you fucking kidding me?

This will not only turn them into wusses, but it will also make sure kids stay nice and fat, since they're not allowed to run around anymore.

No more indoor recess either...I mean some kid my choke on the checkers.....or get upset because he didn't get to become a doctor when playing life.

Actually, I just noticed something. The article says "unsupervised chase games"

What elementary school DOESN"T supervise their kids outside? If tag is supervised (which I hope it is), is it allowed? I don't remember ever being outside in school without at least 1 teacher present.

On second glace, this article doens't make sense.

Do we have a link for this.

This is tooooooo idiotic for me to believe without a link and an author email to send something back to.

most of my memories happened playing sports during 15 minutes of recess. It's called being a kid. Does anyone have awesome memories of learning their multiplication tables?

say goodbye to fun.

Here's a good "in my day" story. The grade school I attended did not have a playground. We literally had an asphalt parking lot and that was it. If there was snow on the ground in the morning the school janitor would not plow the entire parking lot so we could play "tackle pom-pom." It was basically a version of "smear the queer" in snow. Some parents had a fit after too many torn clothes and bloody noses so the janitor had to plow the whole lot as early as possible. I'm still pissed about it.

yep, we had teachers all over the playground writing out pink slips if needed... still, even the thought of banning something so benign as tag is ludacrist.

God help Red Rover, Red Rover... don't forget Duck, Duck goose.. Freeze Tag, is it going to go by the wayside as well?

I refuse to answer that question at the risk of incriminating myself. :paranoid:

I liked Fark.com's headline for this:

School bans the game of "tag". Last kid tagged seen sobbing in corner, being avoided by schoolmates
