HTTR Forever.
I don't know how many people who watched this season of Survivor, but I just watched Sunday's finale and reunion show and I have to say this is the first time that the result was actually quite annoying.

***Spoiler alert for those who DVR'd the finale***

There has never been a better player on this show than Russel. He found three hidden immunity idols without a single clue, manipulated his initial tribe (Foa Foa) into doing exactly what he wanted, and then got Shambo to defect from Galu and eliminated their entire tribe with the exception of Brett who kept winning individual immunity.

From the very beginning, Russel played this game like no one ever had. He made his own tribe miserable by doing things like dumping out water at night and burning Jaison's socks. He used their discomfort to manipulate them. Natalie and Mick were just along for the ride, two people who accomplished nothing in the entire game. Russel had it set up perfectly. Himself against two people who rode his coattails and did whatever he told them to do in the finale.

So what happens? The jury, realizing the Russel made them all look stupid from the word go, played the game better than anyone ever had in 19 seasons, gave the win to Natalie. That is just a new level of sour grapes. Russel was the overwhelming choice for Player of the Game in the online poll. Natalie and Mick weren't even in the top three. So Russel got $100,000 out of that. (But he doesn't need the money, he owns a farking oil company). Just rather annoying that the best player the game had ever seen got screwed out of the title because the jury was ashamed of how bad they got beat.

the whole determination of the winner system is flawed. you let a jury of people that got kicked off decide who wins, and most of those people are ridiculously bitter over being played by smarter people. russell was the ultimate puppet master and was totally brilliant. it was a sham.

I hate Survivor (and reality TV in general), but watching Russel dominate and manipulate was just too enjoyable to pass up. Watching the faces of everyone else when the hidden idols came out of Russel's clothes was priceless. Easily the best player the game has seen, and probably will see.

If Russell was a great player he would know what he needs to do throughout the game to get votes from the jury. Being the domineering asshole mastermind isn't usually the way to get the jury's vote. He should have never gotten rid of Jaison or Shambo. Jaison was lazy from about the 5th day, and Shambo stabbed her tribe in the back. Those were the only two that Russell had a chance to beat.

I don't think it would have really mattered who went with him to the jury vote, because they were all bitter and didn't give a crap about who actually played versus someone who just rode the coattails of Russell (which Natalie and Mick both did). Having Shambo and Jaison would have promised Jaison a win. A few people may have voted for Russell, but that doesn't change the fact that they were all bitter about being played on a level not seen before. If you play as strong as Russell did, you pretty much secure yourself a spot in the finale, but you piss everyone off. If you play lighter enough that people still like you even after you get them out, then you are way too vulnerable to go as well. Is it worth risking your safety every week to play that kind of game knowing there's a good chance you don't make it far enough? With this season's group, I don't think so.

a bit OT (what else is new?)-
Never watched the show until this season. Brett is a former student leader of mine, and his family knows my in-laws (from Salem OR, muffler).

Great kid, and I was glad to see him "play" so well.

That being said, I'm not surprised that he was not in the final two, and agree that Russel should have won.

I agree... Russell definitely should have won. I think what swung the votes was Eric's speech. If it wasn't for that, I bet Russell would have pulled it off. It was actually well thought out.

Again though, they were all just bitter and that's why Russell didn't win. It wasn't that he didn't play an awesome game, they just hated the fact of him winning after being so egotistical.

At least he won the $100,000 :)

Winner of the first season of Survivor, Richard Hatch, has been released from prison after serving nine months for a parole violation related to his three year tax evasion incarceration. He won a million dollars in 2000, and is now destitute and homeless.

AP article from 10tv

He went back to prison in March for violating the terms of his supervised release by failing to settle his tax bill. He had claimed he was "financially destitute."

Hatch said Monday night he was "happy" to have been released but didn't know where he would be staying. He maintained he's innocent of failing to pay his taxes.
