Watson, Crick & A Twist
Basically, if inmates are undocumented and are in a local jail is it the local taxpayers responsibility to pay for their care, or should the Feds shoulder the burden. If the Feds decline is it not also their responsibility to deport these inmates?
So in Ohio the Butler County Sheriff is billing to the Feds at $70 per day per head. (At those rates even SGN would be healthy soon).
Well - I'm surprised by the contention in the prose below that this is the first time anything like this has been done, but I doubt the local voters will be anything but supportive. (he also has an online poll asking if you agree with his position).

Sheriff Jones Mails Out Bill for Housing Undocumented Aliens![]()
Following through on a statement he made at last week’s News Conference, Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones mailed a bill to the Federal Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) for prisoners believed to be “Undocumented Aliens” currently housed in the Butler County Jail. The bill, calculated through the end of October, is for a total of $71,610.00 covering the fifteen (15) identified individuals currently in jail, some of whom have been in jail since June, 2005. It represents a total of 1,023 billable days at $70.00/day. Future bills of the same nature are expected to be mailed out at the end of each subsequent month, beginning November, 2005.
Last week Sheriff Jones, along with State Representative Courtney Combs and Butler County Commissioner Mike Fox, took a strong public stance against ever-increasing problems and financial burdens associated with illegal/undocumented aliens here at the local, Butler County, level. They hope to spearhead change in Ohio Law to make it illegal for any undocumented alien to trespass in the State of Ohio.
In sending today’s bill to ICE, Sheriff Jones believes he is the first Sheriff in Ohio, and possibly across the United States, to bill the Federal Government for general inmates in his jail that appear to be undocumented. “Why should Butler County taxpayers have to pay for jail costs associated with people we don’t believe should ever have been in this country, let alone this state, or county, to begin with?” asks Sheriff Jones. “These prisoners appear to be undocumented. They are in my jail because they have committed crimes here. It’s time the Federal Government should at least pay for the criminals they let stay here. If they don’t want to pay for them, then they can deport them,” he added.
