Occasionally, dreams do come true. In the case of Terre Haute, Indiana shortstop Jacob Hayes, a lifelong dream is about to become a reality. Currently ranked as the #9 overall senior prospect in Indiana, Jacob is committed to don the Scarlet and Gray next season. The BPRT caught up with the slick middle infielder during his pursuit of a state championship for another edition of The Straight Six.
BPRT: When you think of Ohio State, what comes to mind?
JH: Although I've never been a big college football fan, I think of Ohio State as a big-time school for both athletics and academics. I notice that here in my home town of Terre Haute, even people who have no real connection to the university are often wearing Ohio State t-shirts because they are fans. I also think of following in my cousin Mike's footsteps as a baseball player. Although he was a pitcher at Ohio State (1989-94) and I'm heading there as an infielder, I feel a real connection to the program and the school. Playing for the Buckeyes has been a dream of mine since I was a kid.
BPRT: What position would you prefer to play in college and why?
JH: Shortstop. That's what I have been recruited by the coaching staff to play and it's where I'm most comfortable. Plus, I love playing the position.
BPRT: You have one more year in your high school career...what goals have you set personally and for your team?
JH: One of my personal goals was to hit over .400 for the season. I have been above .400 most of the year, although I might have slipped a little below recently. My other goal was to continue to be a team leader in every way. Obviously, as a team we would like to win a state championship. To do that, we have to start by winning our 4th straight Sectional, which starts next week.
BPRT: When your career is over, how would you like people to remember Jacob Hayes?
JH: I would like to be remembered as a player that always worked hard, played for the team and not for himself, and remained humble in the process. I would also like to be remembered for my desire for my team to win championships.
BPRT: If you were analyzing yourself, what would you list as your strengths and what needs some work?
JH: Probably my greatest strength is my speed. I like being able to get to balls that many infielders may not be able to reach. I'm constantly striving to make myself into not just a good hitter, but a great hitter.
BPRT: What are some of your favorite things to do away from the diamond?
JH: I enjoy listening to music, as well as playing both drums and acoustic guitar. I began playing drums at age 9, and started playing guitar this past Christmas. I also enjoy spending time with a group of 3 or 4 of my closest friends who will all be attending different colleges this fall. I also enjoy playing golf when I can. I also LOVE the roller coasters at Cedar Point.
