Ben Roethlisberger had surgery Monday morning on the torn meniscus in his left knee, and there’s a good chance he’ll return sooner rather than later.

Pro Football Talk reported before the surgery that it would be a “cleanup” as opposed to a “repair,” which should shorten his recovery time.

“Though we do not know a specific timetable for when he will be able to return to the field, we are confident this injury is not long-term,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement via Mark Kaboly of DK on Pittsburgh Sports.

Roethlisberger’s knee was injured during Sunday’s 30-15 loss at Miami. He played through the injury in the second half.

Landry Jones is set to start in place of Roethlisberger Sunday against the Patriots at Heinz Field. The Steelers have a bye in Week 8 and go to Baltimore in Week 9. Roethlisberger, who leads the league with 16 touchdown passes, could be back for that game.

For now, the Steelers (4-2) lead the AFC North because the Ravens also lost Sunday.
