welp good year as always and even more so because there were more interesting and closer games. i watched all except for D2 which i regret because i was thawing out.
D6: not to be harsh but this game just lacks the flare of the others after watching coldwater/mooney play but watched it regardless as a delphos native. pretty much finished how i expected. i was impressed with the effort by the SCC running back considering he wasnt getting any help especially from the quarterback which had a pretty poor performance. got to enjoy some fan fighting behind us
to be honest i have been surprised at the drop off in play of D6. yes i go to jefferson and dislike st johns but i have to give them credit for winning state but i was amazed that this years team being so undersized won state. the non playoff team from last year would of plowed right over this years st johns squad but hats off them anyways for #4. they had control of this game for most of the entire game. weather wasnt too bad as i was on the SCC side and the wind was barely existent saturday.
D5: this game was about exactly what i expected. patrick henry in my opinion based off of many other performances i have seen them play in, this was one of their worst. they had needless penalties, george was slightly underthrowing receivers, and in the second half they straight up let CHCA get those points but maybe i am just too used to seeing them dominate. krauss looked phenomonal as usual in the first half and i hope somebody finally looks at him and gives him the attention he deserves. while george didnt have very good day he can throw the ball very well and at 6'2" i hope he can take it to the next level. yarnell was very quiet all day but provided a lot of deceiving attention that left krauss open and i was really hoping the lil guy would have caught the diving pass for the td but it was just not there. PH finally got their title after the hell they went through last year. congrats to CHCA for making to the state game. one thing that impressed me is how little people were there. what was up with that? i figured this would be a decent crowd for 2 high scoring wide open teams but i guess not.
D4: Mooney sure looked out of sync and really carrying no positive character into this game which in some ways is somewhat understandable after the turmoil i heard they went through with derrell johnson that week but i dont want to start a controversy unless everybody wants to hear it. the backup qb was in a rock and a hard place and he was just not ready to play in that game with no experience. im assuming he has never played a game since johnson and mccarthy have been there but he just wasnt ready. coldwater defense was stingy as usual. geyer made some great catches and borger had a great day passing. he was spot on. i was basking in sun on the away side and actually wearinga t shirt because the sun was so warm. i think mooney would of had a great chance to win this game with johnson playing because mooney became entirely a one dimensional team and even then it became a half dimensional team at that because burney carried the load and when the offense wasnt producing their inspiration seemed to dwindle. congrats to coldwater regardless state champs. i was very annoyed by the MAC chant which is proving to be more of arrogance than good natured anymore but im over it.
D3: this game was a battle of the most QB draws and sweeps i have seen in my life. definitely a strange game but steuby was going to break a play sooner or later. kind of a redundant game with a different character to it. desales was a slight bit outphysicalled but hung in there. not really much to say in this game. nothing really eventful in it.
D2: time to thaw out my feet so i didnt go and watch but sounded like TCC played a good game and pulled some stuff out to win. nice to see a toledo team win state, its been a while.
D1: everybody looks forward to the big game. after watching D6 its like watching a midget football game and then watching an NFL game
. anyways we left the st johns game in the 3rd quarter and headed to canton and got there about 5:45. this game was creepy because we drove right in and got a parking spot in our usual great location on helen street and nobody was even there. we were expecting a mass of people and not being able to geta ticket. exactly the opposite. sat in the car ate some food loved our awesome parking for free and walked right up to the ticket window at 6:30 and 3 people were in line. this was beginning to be too good to be true......great usual parking for free that should have been filled, then we just walk up and buy some tickets for regular price and dont even have to wait to get them. was real weird as was when the game was over because usally broad is loaded with traffic and we just drove right out without ANY hesitation. easiest game we have ever got in and out at any division ever. anyways massillon has some really FAT offensive linemen but they moved well enough in the game. X was a tiny D1 team but extremely quick. both running backs gamble and ashley looked great. gamble run very hard pushing the pile and made some great grabs on the receiving end of things. ashley was very quick and pounded it very well for his extremely small size. he definitely should get a patent for his spin technique. deciding factor would probably have to be the X QB. XTREMELY small team and so was the qb. he wasnt really fast but man oh man was he ever quick and had nifty moves to elude defenders and pick up key gains. this game came down to the big plays. ashley got the ball ripped out and the washington player scored and X returned the punt back for a td right before halftime. for the ease of getting in and out the stadium was pretty full at 20,500. this game was very hard hitting and i had a great view of the washington player getting blasted at the sideline as i was on the X side in section 9. that was a thing of beauty.
i will have to give washington credit they hung in there and had a shot at least to tie it up but the starting QB took a head shot and left. i felt bad for the backup but that was the end of the game. i was INFURIATED by the call in the first quarter when they called unnecessary roughness on X for tackling the washington player. that was one of the worst calls i have ever seen. they sucked for most of the night as washington had one pass over the middle that gave them a big gain for a first down that was a clear drop but it ddnt effect the outcome of the game so its all good. neither od these teams held a candle to the colerain team of last year but this was one of the better D1 games as of lately with the big hits, great atmosphere, and big plays. i still miss the elder crowd though
congrats to stacy on turning washingtons program around. they seem like they have some youth coming up so who knows maybe next year they will finally get their first title. best of luck to both teams.
