One of the complaints about Mozilla Firefox is that it isn't as fast as IE. I was given these tips to speed up the browser, and it really does work (if you're using broadband):

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

I must admit though.... I look forward to Internet Explorer 7.0
Why, because it will be the first significant upgrade in like 5 years? Ever since they monopolized Netscape, they have kicked back and put their feet up... occasionally patching a new virus or whatever. Yes I realize there have been "new" versions.

Microsoft is everything that is wrong with America. If they controlled everything in the computing and internet market like they want, we would see no innovation at all. They have proven this time and again that they only innovate where there is stiff competition (ie Gaming consoles, linux pressure).

No offense BFS... but Microsoft is the reason why FireFox and others have all the features they do...

It's a cycle....

Step 1) Microsoft got 95%+ marketshare..
Step 2) FireFox, Opera, etc.. had to implement shit loads of great features to get people to switch...
Step 3) Microsoft Answers back with a browser with all those features, but with more security improvements
Step 4 and so on and so forth.

Microsoft isn't the bad guy.. they are just a very important part in keeping the ball turning... and once 7.0 is released... the ball will have finally reached Step 3.

I'm just saying there are other companies which have a total domination of the market, but still will add features to keep themselves on top rather than refusing to do so unless forced to.

That's my beef with MS vs. other big monopolies.

I realize no company is going to make tons of incredible changes unless they have to do so, but IMO M$ is the worst at doing the least possible.

they have other things to worry about... IE makes them no profit. What's the point in fixing IE if they have other things to work on that makes them money?

I can make the arguement that the only reason they are fixing IE now is so that it makes Windows more secure...

But seriously.. there's no point in them fixing IE unless they have to.. there are other products on the market that work well enough without them having to spend money on a no profit venture. That's good business.

i put in the changes and haven't really noticed anything

You really won't if you use P2P programs, as WindowsXP has a hard coded TCP/IP limit.

That's like saying the American car companies of the late '70s and early '80s and their totally pieces-of-shit vehicles are the reason why Japan made such great cars.

I have to work with Microsoft shit every damn day, especially at work. I fucking hate Microsoft. There's always some sort of patch or fix that ends up fucking up something else. NT4 was the only thing remotely resembling a stable product that they put out.

I'm going to try this, Sushi... thanks. :)

I've had another very odd issue with Firefox... sometimes, if I'm logged in to BP for a while (that never happens :p ), the browser won't navigate to any other domain - I can get anywhere here, but nowhere off the site until I reboot. Weird, huh? Any thoughts?

You may want to check out moox.ws.

I think that is a Firefox browser with the enhancements.

I have been using since it was thunderbird, I like the tabbed browsing.

Some sites just don't work well with Firefox.

It, Firefox, has also gotten enough attention that the less than desirables have started to exploit it's security flaws.

Oh well.. I'm not gonna get into an arguement regarding Open Source.. because most people are not open minded about it.

It's a lot like Apple to PC, or Ford to Chevy... once you no longer keep listening, it doesn't matter.
