Mikey Williams signs with Excel Sports for NIL deal expected to 'generate millions' for high school basketball star

Explosive scoring guard Mikey Williams won't be eligible for the NBA draft until 2024 and still has nearly two years to decide on college basketball or a pro pathway.

Yet his massive social media following -- more than 5 million followers across multiple platforms -- has allowed Williams to become the first prep basketball star to sign with a major sports representation agency to pursue NIL endorsements and sponsorships.

Williams, a San Diego native who will attend Lake Norman Christian in Huntersville, North Carolina, and play for Vertical Academy, has signed a deal with Excel Sports management that Excel vice president Matt Davis said he believes "will generate millions of dollars for this young man."

"Mikey's relevance around his peers in the basketball community is off the charts," Davis told ESPN. "He's one of the most relevant personalities in the basketball community. His digital and social following speak for themselves."

Williams is the No. 7 overall prospect in ESPN's top 100 for the class of 2023. His significant prominence among Generation Z has afforded him the chance to be a groundbreaking high school athlete in the NIL marketplace.

"The NIL rules provide a new opportunity for someone like me who that has put in so much energy and effort into building a community," Williams told ESPN in a statement. "I am excited to be the first high school athlete to make this move. I love to hoop and I love engaging with my fans and look forward to continuing to share my journey with everyone."

Re: https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Mikey-Williams-131435/RecruitInterests/

Just sayin': Two (Travis Branham, 24/7 Sports and Miles Masercola, NC State) of the 3 Crystal Balls already have him just going "professional" with a high (7) confidence.

I would think the same applies to h.s. kids as college. The slight difference is that colleges were and still bring in $ in ads etc. using the kids NIL, It isn't as prevalent in h.s. sports. But if the kid has that much of a presence then I am not sure why it shouldn't be allowed. As long as it isn't the school paying the kid to play for them - which happens anyway - this is better than those sleazy tactics.

Mikey Williams, 17, signs historic footwear and apparel deal with Puma

As the amateur basketball landscape continues to evolve in a new era of name, image and likeness deals, 17-year-old prep phenom Mikey Williams has landed a multiyear footwear and apparel endorsement deal with Puma, making him the first American high school basketball player to sign a sneaker deal with a global footwear company.

"I am excited to join the Puma family this early in my basketball journey," Williams said. "Puma really understands how to mix hoops and culture, two things I am passionate about."

A 6-foot-2 junior at the newly formed Vertical Academy in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Class of 2023 combo guard is still a few years away from being eligible for the 2024 NBA draft. He is ranked as the 11th-best prospect in his high school class by ESPN and has 10 scholarship offers from college programs.

Williams has more than 5 million combined Instagram, TikTok and Twitter followers, and Puma looks at his unique and early signing as unlocking his hybrid appeal of being both an up-and-coming basketball star and social media influencer.

Memphis basketball recruit Mikey Williams faces gun charge

Mikey Williams, the elite and popular basketball prospect who is set to attend Memphis next season, was arrested Thursday in San Diego on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

Per San Diego Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Gavin Lanning, Williams -- ranked 34th in ESPN's list of the top-100 recruits in the 2023 class -- paid a $50,000 bond and was released at 12:14 a.m. on Friday. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday.

There are multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon against Williams, according to police documents, but he is probably facing one charge, per Lanning. Williams is accused of violating California penal code Chapter 9, a (2), which involves "any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a firearm." The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison.

.
On a recent appearance on the "I Am Athlete" podcast, Williams said he hopes to be smart about his investments in the future.

"I'm trying to be worth a billion dollars by the time I'm 25," he said.....

Just sayin': He sure wasn't "smart" here with the "assault with a deadly weapon" charges. Makes you wonder if Puma regrets that NIL deal now.
