The number one topic that is burning through Buckeye Nation this week is how Urban Meyer’s offense needs to improve if his team wants to make a championship run. Many have pointed at the quarterback situation. Some have blamed the coaching staff themselves for not putting their players in a position to succeed.

Others are sold that it’s just a matter of time before this new offense clicks on the field. This week, the staff at The Buckeye Battle Cry ponders in our weekly roundtable if a different vantage point would benefit Ohio State’s rhythm throughout the game.

Question: Would putting Ed Warinner in the press box provide a major benefit to Ohio State’s offensive playcalling and struggles?

It might help a little as it provides a better perspective on defensive alignment but the problems with the play calling haven’t been caused by a failure to recognize defensive alignments.

The biggest problem with the play calling is that Ohio State is abandoning things that are working and that are strengths for us. Zeke was doing really well in the second half against NIU but there were several times where we just stopped giving him the ball.

I don’t think this will be fixed just by moving Warinner to the press box.

As long as Ed Warinner is the Offensive Line coach, he needs to be down on the sideline so he can see what’s going on in the trenches. Inconsistent line play has been a big reason for The Buckeyes’ offensive struggles.

The bottom line is this team has to be able to establish the run to open the passing game.

I doubt the moving Warinner to the coaches box will help. There are a couple issues that I have with the offense this year. First, the Staff has gotten away from the successful plays of last season, with (except for WR) nearly the same returning players. This baffles me no end. How can the same returning ‘cast of characters’ can be so much less efficient than last season.

Instead of moving Warinner to the coaches box, he should be moved out of the co-coordinator position and given exclusive responsibility of developing the offensive line. Let Warinner run the offensive line and assign Beck to call the plays. Wasn’t that why Beck was hired?

I have been on Warinner’s case from the beginning just due to the fact that he isn’t bringing the offensive coaching unit together as a staff. I am not in the thinking that him being in the press box will improve anything because he needs to be down on the field with his linemen.

That being said, maybe there’s a need to give one of the other coaches an opportunity to call some plays on a few series.

I like Zach Smith even though, like I said in my article earlier this week, I’m not suggesting him as an offensive play caller.

I do not believe moving Warinner upstairs will make any major impact. The duel coordinator position has failed. In two games where there “should” have been blowouts we witnessed nothing short of desperation. Having two minds in the final decision arena will always deliver sub-par results – case proven last week,

The decision to move Warinner strictly to the OL is needed now. Beck should be the Offensive Coordinator. As Ken pointed out this had been the purpose of his hiring. What is the delay?

Only one mind in control will deliver. It isn’t a democracy on the football field. It’s battle. Urban is the General and the final word. The Coordinators are respectively in charge of their areas (Offensive: Defensive). And their plan should be “theirs”, In battle how many times do you see a co-partnership?

The experiment has failed. Hand the reigns solely to Beck and let’s get this talent rolling as we know they can.

My thoughts on this have fluctuated throughout the week and while I agree with everyone else on the staff, I do firmly believe that there needs to be eyes in the sky. Those eyes also have to play a major part in decision making and not be thrown up there just to be the guy you go to on challenge worth plays, or every once in a great while.

That’s the issue here.

I don’t think that Urban Meyer trusts Tim Beck enough to give him that role. He trusted Tom Herman. He believes in Ed Warinner and his value to this program. Tim Beck has yet to have an imprint on anything short or long term when it relates to Ohio State.

That’s where the issues subside.

Urban Meyer believes he has to be the quarterbacks coach. He doesn’t trust that Tim Beck as his co-offensive coordinator can call plays from the booth. Frankly, if we don’t see that trust dished out anytime soon, it’s hard to expect that Beck will be back next year and the truth is that he was just a stopgap until Urban can find a better replacement.

Tim Beck is on the outside looking in and the Buckeyes are wasting an asset.

It’s no secret that the former Cornhusker offensive coordinator is good friends with Warinner. I just hope that their relationship at Ohio State doesn’t end in both coaches leaving, or even more likely, being asked to leave the program.
