S Ja'had Carter (Transfer to...)

The Syracuse transfer safety needed the help of two trainers to limp off the field after a 7-on-7 play and initially didn’t appear able to bear weight on his injured leg. Carter eventually came back onto the field under his own strength, but didn’t return to action and continued to favor his right leg.

After practice, Ryan Day said Carter sustained a knee injury but remains hopeful it won’t be a long-term issue following positive indications from the Buckeye medical staff’s early inspection. However, Day said Ohio State won’t be certain about the severity until Carter undergoes further evaluations.

Styles and Carter spent nearly the entire practice repping as first-team safeties alongside returning starter Lathan Ransom. In a notable change from the spring, Carter worked primarily as a deep safety alongside Ransom while Styles frequently lined up as the nickel safety.
“Ja’Had being a transfer has just been a very coachable player. He's one of those guys you can say something to, correct it, and he corrects it immediately on the field. That's rare. So his learning and processing of our system has been great,” Knowles said after practice.
After transferring to Ohio State from Syracuse this offseason, Carter practiced primarily at the nickel safety spot until he suffered a knee injury that ended his spring early. Now, however, Knowles says the Buckeyes are planning to play Carter at the adjuster/free safety spot after determining he would fit better at that position in OSU’s defensive scheme.

“Ja’Had is more of a high safety,” Knowles said. “We experimented with him on the slot, and that's part of learning the system. It's good for safeties to play different positions early, but he's more of a high safety.”

  • Lathan Ransom has had a “great camp, great spring,” Knowles said. Added that Josh Proctor, Malik Hartford and Ja’Had Carter will also be in competition for a role in the defense.
At adjuster, Knowles wants to “solidify” the starter in an ongoing competition between Proctor, Hartford and Carter. Added that he’s worried about depth at defensive tackle with how much guys “beat up,” though he likes pieces that they have.

Back in the portal.

With this January’s transfer addition of former Alabama safety Caleb Downs to be the new starting free safety, Carter’s path to a bigger role this season if he stayed at Ohio State didn’t look promising. With Lathan Ransom back as the starting strong safety and Hancock back as the starting nickelback, Carter was destined to be a backup once again.

Just sayin': I guess you can't blame him. I do wish him well though.
