Donte Whitner emerged as a leader of the 49ers secondary in 2011 during his first season in San Francisco. A man who takes pride in his mental side of the game, Whitner has also established himself as one of the league?s hardest-hitting safeties throughout his career. The veteran recently spoke with 49ers.com ahead of the team?s Week 2 matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Yesterday I had to wait to get some reps catching balls from the Jugs machine after practice because there were so many players using it. Having guys in our secondary catching deep balls to try to get that same look you get in the football game is a really good thing. Guys like Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Garrett Celek are always going over to the Jugs machine to put in extra work because they want to be great. It shows what kind of team we have.

I need to get on the Jugs machine myself after dropping that pick in the fourth quarter last week. The ball was coming really fast, but still it?s no excuse not to catch the football. I actually dropped an interception three years ago up in Green Bay on the goal line. I had a chance to take it 99 yards. It was coming extremely fast, too. I told myself going into this game that I would have my opportunity to put my hands on the ball and that I was going to look it all the way in and then return it. The same thing ended up happening again. Aaron Rodgers has crazy velocity on that football when he throws it especially when you?re about 15-yards from him. It?s still no excuse so I have to continue to work on catching the ball.

Win, lose or draw there?s a 24-hour rule that comes with thinking about the last game. That was the case this week. You have to get over it and get ready for the next game immediately. It?s professional sports and this is a very humbling game. If you go out there thinking you?ve arrived this game can quickly humble you. We understand that, and that?s why we work like we do.

I?m looking forward to the home opener. I know that the fans want to see us after we went to Lambeau Field and won that football game. To have our first home game be nationally-televised under the lights of Candlestick is going to be special. The crowd is going to be electric, and that?s how we are going to need them to be. We are going to need them to be that 12th man. We want the crowd to be really loud and take care of their responsibilities. We want to get some false starts on their offense and hopefully that will propel us through the football game to a big win.

the 49ers have the top safety combo in the NFL?
After watching the tape, Whitner and Goldson are my No.1. Matt Bowen
September 19, 2012

It?s no secret that I focus on DB play when watching tape. I look at footwork, range, eyes, tackling and angles. The key techniques you need to be a productive player in the secondary.

And in today?s NFL, you better have two safeties in the backend that can get off the numbers in Cover 2, play the deep middle of the field, walk down over a slot, get hands on a TE and tackle in the open field.

That?s why I have no problem calling 49ers? safeties Donte Whitner and Dashon Goldson the best combo I?ve studied on tape.

I played with Whitner Buffalo during the 2006 season when the Bills drafted the safety out of Ohio State. No question he had the physical tools, but just like any rookie, he was needed time to develop those raw skills.

Look at the Niners? SS now. Whitner can play Cover 2 (or 2-Man), break off the numbers on the 9 (fade) or 7 (corner), make plays in the run game, carry No.2 vertical in a zone blitz scheme and light up WRs inside of the numbers.

The best part about being able to stay in Ohio for a week was being able to see my family and my children. Just hanging out at my place, for me, was the best part. As far as building team camaraderie, that?s one of the reasons why we were up there. Being in Youngstown after our first loss, our first taste of adversity, it was good. It allowed us to think about where we were as a team, what mistakes we made and how we could go out there and improve and that?s what we did against the New York Jets.

We?re all proud that we haven?t lost back-to-back games under Jim Harbaugh. It?s like life, you take pride in being able to bounce back from adverse situations and adverse things that happen to you. It?s like that in the National Football League, you lose games and you want to bounce back. You don?t walk around holding your head down or feeling sorry for yourself. You go in there and watch the film and you look at yourself in the mirror and you figure out ways to improve and that?s what we did.

One of my favorite spots to eat in Ohio is at Chick Fil-A. I think I went to Chick Fil-A almost every day. I actually didn?t get to go to any other restaurants around my house because my mom likes to cook for me when I come home, but it?s even better than going out. She made a big pan of lasagna for me ? it?s my favorite ? and she also made a lot of spaghetti and pasta, too.

Donte Whitner: Bills 'chasing something that's not there'
October 7, 2012
By Tim Graham

SAN FRANCISCO -- Donte Whitner, always the locker-room philosopher, had enough thoughts about Sunday's game to fill up Buffalo News columnist Bucky Gleason's notebook in the San Francisco 49ers' locker room.

San Francisco throttled Buffalo, 45-3, Sunday in Candlestick Park. It was Whitner's first game against the team that drafted him in the first round six years ago.

Whitner experienced a lot of losing before switching to the Niners as a free agent last year. He knows what it felt like to walk off the field lumped up in a Bills uniform.

"I feel for the players over there because I don't think it's the players," Whitner told Gleason. "I think that it's management. They're chasing something that's not there. Guys like George Wilson and Jairus Byrd, guys that give you 100 percent on every play, they don't get rewarded for things they do on the football field.

"They're constantly bringing new guys in, and that's who they give all the money to. It starts with management. I don't think it has anything to do with the players. The players are going to work hard and do everything that the coaches put them in positions to do.

"I feel for those guys. Hopefully, it will get better. Hopefully, something changes."

It?s always special to play on Monday Night Football. It?s a showcase game that all of your peers, family and friends from all over can watch. As a team, we want to go out there and showcase our talents and show that we are a good, dominant football team.

I remember going down to Arizona last year and we made a lot of mistakes in that football game. My hat goes off to the Cardinals, but we?ve matured and come a lot further than where we were at that point. We understand what a challenge it is going to be this time, but we don?t want to have any letdowns.

Reporters tell us that we?re the No. 1 pass defense right now statistically, but we?re not talking about that right now. I don?t think we need to talk about that right now. If we get to week 15, 16 or 17 and we?re still top five or No. 1, maybe then it deserves to be talked about.

But right now we?re just chipping away. There?s more turnovers out there for us to get and we want to continue to not give up the big pass plays, to keep tackling well and not let opposing teams have a 100-yard receiver.

Coming off the bye week, I think there was a faster tempo at practice this week. Guys were fresher than before we left after having a bye week and a Monday Night game. During the bye week I went back home to see family in Cleveland for a minute, then I went to Miami for the weekend.

We?re well-rested and healthy. As far as the preparation, we have a little bit more time to prepare for the St. Louis Rams, who are also coming off a bye week. We expect to go out there, execute our defense, our fundamentals and play really good defense on Sunday.

It was a little rainy the last few days, but it might be a little prep for what the game could be like on Monday. It?s not always going to be pretty in football games. You saw last week Chicago played Houston in a muddy game. They like playing in games like that so we?ll be ready. It?s all good preparation for Monday.

We?re happy everything is going better for our coach with his health. Coach Harbaugh underwent a minor procedure on Thursday and came right back to work, even on the same day as the procedure. It shows that he?s a team player. When there?s something wrong with your health and all you can think about is your team, football, while you?re not here, you know that you?re a really a good head coach. We?re glad he?s OK and back on the football field.

Goldson, Whitner making middle of the field a dangerous place for 49ers? opponents

49ers%20Saints%20Football.JPEG-01820.jpg

Bill Feig/Associated Press - San Francisco 49ers strong safety Donte Whitner (31) scores on a touchdown run in the second half of an NFL football game against the New Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012.

By Associated Press, Published: November 30

SANTA CLARA, Calif. ? There?s a price to pay for those who venture across the middle of the San Francisco 49ers? defense.

Dashon Goldson and Donte Whitner are making sure of that.

The territory patrolled by the hard-hitting safeties has become a danger zone this season for San Francisco opponents, several of whom have had to be helped off the field after getting leveled by one of the two veterans ? or both at the same time.

Their impact was felt simultaneously by the New Orleans Saints last week, when one of Goldson?s big hits led to an interception Whitner returned for the touchdown that put the 49ers in control on their way to a 31-21 victory.

That was one of two interceptions returned for touchdowns at New Orleans by the San Francisco defense, which feels it has something to prove this week at St. Louis after one of its worst performances of the season led to a 24-24 overtime tie with the Rams three weeks ago.
