S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

While Buffalo?s Donte Whitner has never been amongst the elite safeties we?ve graded (in fact he?s at the other end of the scale with far more regularity), the five missed tackles he notched this season was good enough for a ratio of just one miss in 27.20 attempts, 7th best in the league, and bettered by just Hill in terms of full-time starters. In fact, Whitner was comfortably the most prolific safety in the study in terms of tackle attempts, and his ratio becomes all the more impressive when you consider that he stuck his head in there more times than any other safety, and more than four times as often as all but one of the players ahead of him on the list.

Whitner is closely followed by his Buffalo teammate Jairus Byrd, who heads a trio of starting safeties that also includes Chicago?s Danieal Manning and the Broncos? Brian Dawkins, all of whom finished with over 22 attempts per miss.

Donte Whitner, S ? Cleveland native and former high first-round pick has already campaigned publicly for a reunion with new defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and a chance to revive his career in his hometown. The first concern is he hasn't lived up to his draft status, and the second is he's a lot like T.J. Ward and the Browns need more of a center field-type safety. What the Browns really need is guys who want to get better and thrive with this fresh start, and Whitner fits that bill. The Browns wouldn't pay him top dollar, but they would provide Whitner, who turns 26 this summer, with a nice opportunity.

Whitner no sure thing to leave Buffalo
Posted May 22, 2011
By PFW staff

Following are whispers we've been hearing from around the league:

? Donte Whitner's future continues to be up in the air, as he maintained early this month that he wants to be a Buffalo Bill, even after GM Buddy Nix said he doesn't think Whitner wanted to stay with the Bills. The selections of CB Aaron Williams and SS Da'Norris Searcy in the draft give the Bills insurance should Whitner leave. But, if the NFL plays under 2010 rules, Whitner might not even have that option as a fifth-year player. He was offered a restricted free-agent tender, and he told The Associated Press that he "wouldn't have any problem with that" when asked about playing one more season in Buffalo for the tender. If Whitner sticks around, it would only bolster the team's deepest unit.

Whitner Brings Physical Presence
Nick Eatman
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer

Name: Donte Whitner
Position: Safety
College: Ohio State
Height/Weight: 5-11/205
Age: 25
NFL Experience: 5 seasons

Availability: After signing a five-year deal as the No. 8 overall pick in 2006, Whitner has played out his contract in Buffalo and is expected to be an unrestricted free agent once the signing period begins. While the Bills could always re-sign him, Whitner will be free to ink with any team and he's expected to be one of the top safeties in what has become a rather loaded market for the position.

What He Brings: Whitner brings some physicality to the defense. Chosen so high, it's always hard for safeties to reach the lofty expectations of their pick. Whitner doesn't possess the ability to make consistent plays, such as interceptions or forced fumbles, although he did have a pick in his NFL debut in 2006 off Tom Brady. But that was Whitner's only interception of that rookie campaign and he's had only five in five years overall. Last season, Whitner did post a career-high 94 tackles for the Bills.

Sudden impact: Donte Whitner

(Identifying some free agents who could be a solid fit for the Patriots when the 2011 league year begins.)

Luc Leclerc/US PresswireDonte Whitner would be an upgrade in the Patriots' secondary and probably won't break the bank.
Player: Donte Whitner (safety, Bills)

Why sign him? A lack of consistency in the back end of the defense has hurt the Patriots in recent seasons. Despite being named to back-to-back Pro Bowls, fifth-year veteran Brandon Meriweather saw his playing time reduced in 2010, in part because of undisciplined play. Meriweather enters the final year of his contract, as does James Sanders, so Whitner would also provide a veteran presence both in the short- and long-term. A first-round pick in 2006, the 25-year-old Whitner doesn't figure to break the bank in free agency. He is coming off a season in which he recorded 140 tackles, seven passes defensed, and one interception.

Donte Whitner, strong safety: Most Bills fans assume that Whitner is done in Buffalo - not just because of his actions at the end of the 2010 season and on Twitter, but because GM Buddy Nix seems to hold that belief, as well. In a perfect world, I'd like the Bills to retain Whitner - not because there's some untapped potential to finally fulfill his billing as a Top 10 pick, but because he's a good, multi-purpose football player. Interest in retention: high Maximum cap figure: $5.5 million annually

NFL Free Agency Rumors: Donte Whitner, Bengals Have 'Good Chance' At Agreement, According To Report
by Russ Oates

Donte Whitner may have a new NFL home soon enough. ESPN's John Clayton reports that there is a "good chance" Whitner and the Cincinnati Bengals could come to an agreement. The Bengals are in need of a safety, as the team has struggled to find a healthy body at the position over the last few seasons. Roy Williams and Chris Crocker have all missed significant time due to injury (see Cincy Jungle for a complete breakdown on the struggles at the position).

Whitner was the eighth overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2006 NFL Draft and has turned into an effective run-stopping safety. As a result, he isn't much of a ballhawk, picking off five passes in his career. He finished the 2010 season with a career-high 94 solo tackles.

The Cleveland Browns had at one point looked like the front-runners to sign Whitner since their defensive coordinator is Dick Jauron, the coach who drafted Whitner while at the helm in Buffalo. That chance, however, passed with the signing of local product Usama Young

Hobson Doesn't Think Donte Whitner Was Ever On The Radar
Cj_tiny by Josh Kirkendall on Aug 1, 2011

Word began circulating Sunday night that Bills safety Donte Whitner was close enough to sign a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals that ESPN Senior Writer John Clayton called it "a good chance". Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer simply said that both sides were "still talking." Followed up a day later that the two sides were still continuing to talk, but no update was available.

That's when the ticking clock begins getting on my nerves. Patience. Fine. I have it. It's not patience that's disappearing. It's the sinking feeling that the longer something doesn't happen, the more likely it won't. For example, Johnathan Joseph. That also doesn't mean we believe that Donte Whitner is the remaining key to hoist the Lombardi. But we can't argue against the point that he'd be as good a solution to our depth issue at the position as any safety we could acquire.

Star-divide

Fine. We're a patient lot, we'll wait for a safety that posted 140 tackles last season, considering we didn't have a safety that played the position for more than half a season last year (Nelson only played special teams the first half of the year).

Geoff Hobson isn't buying any of it. When asked about a Whitner update, Hobson tweets that he doesn't think it was ever on the radar. Hobson followed that up with "if it was, it didn't go far." That's not to say anything is or isn't happening; sources amongst beat writers and NFL Insiders tends to differ, which produces different prognostications. That's the nature of the business.

Because he now is one.

EDIT: maybe not...local CBS affiliate was reporting it was a done deal, now it appears the story is gone from their site.

He has not signed yet, and as you can see by the above article is sounds like a rumor at best. When I saw the thread I thought "good, they actually signed him." Then I saw the above article and went to the main Bengals forum only to find out I was tricked.

Don't worry, as a Bengals fan I am used to disappointment.
