It might have exorcised some demons but clearly did not get all of them as this week’s good, bad, and ugly will show! Saturday’s match up with Western Michigan was one of those games where you honestly knew that the offense would step up, and were probably surprised at the issues with the run defense. Let’s get going with the very good.
Rumblin’ – A-DOL-PH-US
Eyes got huge the closer to the endzone he got
The run defense left just a little bit to be desired on Saturday as Western Michigan had a fairly productive day. The difference in the game is another part of the front seven has joined #Zone6. Adolphus Washington’s pick six was one of those plays you saw coming as soon as the QB released the ball.
Washington has been playing lights out defense of late and is proving to be quite a bit of a handful for blockers. In the pick six play, he beat out three blockers to side step and pick the ball off. He then showed his athletic prowess by rumblin’ down the field like a diesel, which was what he became named after the play.
One thing is for sure with Washington at this point in the season. He is making it difficult for teams to focus on Bosa and Lewis on the ends. It will be nice watching him develop even more the rest of this season and I have a suspicion that we will talk about him here again.
Let’s see what the staff says about the Rumblin’.
Ken – WMU’s wide receiver Dan Braverman, hauling in 10 catches for 123 yards and a TD. Man, he was exciting. Almost a bit too exciting…
MDotySr – The Ohio State offensive momentum.
Scott – Ohio State offense. Looks like it’s picking up steam.
Stumblin’ – Not So Front Seven
COLUMBUS, OH – SEPTEMBER 26: The Ohio State Buckeyes defense swarms over Jamauri Bogan #32 of the Western Michigan Broncos to hold him to no gain near the Broncos’ goal line in the second quarter at Ohio Stadium on September 26, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images)
In the same breath that I praise Adolphus for his work lately and the play he made in the pick six I am going to blast the defense for over-pursuit. Raekwon McMillan had a tremendous day with 16 tackles and it was one of the better days for a Buckeye line-backer in that regards. What stuck out to me and most fans was the tackles he missed by over pursuing a gap.
During a lot of times in the first half while WMU was moving the ball you could see them baiting the line-backers into those open gaps and then all that was left was a back-side seal block or a push as I call it. McMillan was the biggest over pursuer in the game but everybody along the front seven got caught at some point not staying home.
It’s a good thing the defense as a whole got the job done and scored for the third straight game. If not for some of the good fundamental tackling at the second level for the most part, the Buckeyes could have been staring down a 31-28 deficit late in the game.
Let’s see what the staff says about the Stumblin’.
Ken – OSU’s front seven defenders. They got gashed for 161 yards by WMU’s Bogan/Franklin on the same type inside power plays that OSU used to run. Maybe if OSU ran it more often in practice, they’d know what’s coming..
MDotySr – The first half carries for Zeke…..
Scott – run defense. Got gashed too many times. Gave up too many yards.
Bumblin’ – Not Improving Play Calling
COLUMBUS, OH – SEPTEMBER 26: Head Coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes shouts instructions to his team in the second quarter against the Western Michigan Broncos at Ohio Stadium on September 26, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State defeated Western Michigan 38-12. (Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images)
I’m downgrading the play-calling from the Stumblin last week to Bumblin or very ugly this week. I get that Coach Meyer want’s to praise Tim Beck for his approach to being in the booth and taking a swing at it, so to speak!
The problem here is that as when I was watching the game on Saturday from my stoop in 15/17A, I noticed a negative interaction between Coach Meyer and Coach Warinner and it was basically centered around the play that they had just run with Braxton Miller in shotgun and CJ going wide right.
Now, I am not a lip reader and I definitely cannot hear that far over an almost booing crowd. What I am good at seeing is displeasure on Coach Meyers face. I believe that he said the same thing I was thinking at that point and actually said to a state trooper standing next to me. “Let’s get our base offense right before trying the plays with Braxton or anyone else in wildcat.
I believe in my mind that they will get this right at some point and Braxton will be a threat again just like he was against Va Tech. The big difference between that first game and now? The cat is out of the bag and everyone knows what he is going to do back there. When he finally throws a pass, no matter to who, then the defense will have to stay on their heals for fear of what he will do. Just like when he was actually the starting QB. Here’s hoping it’s improved upon quickly.
Let’s see what the staff says about the Bumblin’.
Ken – Not so much a ‘Bumble’ as a ‘Severe Stumble’, but the play calling is still a work in progress. Two bits of advice: never again run Zeke horizontal to the line of scrimmage and scrap the Wildcat formation.
MDotySr – It’s a tie between Oregon and Alabama. Won’t be no rematch in the CFB of any kind this year.
Scott – Cardale’s clock management. Gotta know a grounding play results in runoff.
