Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the Shoe, Northern Illinois comes to town and puts the scare of a lifetime into Buckeye fans and exposes a few serious issues right now. One may be resolved and the other? Sadly, the staff issue won’t fix itself overnight, but hopefully the woeful line play will. Let’s get rolling with the very, very good.

Rumblin’ – Silver Bullets

Game changer, this Silver Bullet fired the last shot and secured the win

I would have to go back and read all these RSBs the past two season’s but I am pretty sure that I have never used the term “Silver Bullets” in the Rumblin’. One major reason is that it’s a pretty high standard. The original’s were quite arguably the best defense in the history of Ohio State football in 1995.

There have been moment’s since Luke Fickell took over as head coach and then defensive coordinator where the former SB himself has had them on the brink. I simply mean that there were games here and there that the defense won the game for the team and had to. The Silver Bullets, in my humble opinion, is reserved for much, much more.

The Silver Bullet’s as a group is the attacking style of defense that dominates like this team has been doing since the start of the playoffs last season. The difference isn’t personnel because they started just about the same people the whole season last year. It could be scheme but it was almost always the four man front we have grown accustomed to.

Where I think it finally clicked and has been missing for some time(at least since 2002-2003) is the staff. Chris Ash and Larry Johnson brought amazing resumes to the table and had their own ideas for how things should run. They came together late last season and realized they all have the same philosophy, they just needed to see it for themselves.

What you are seeing now could be the best defense Ohio State has ever had. I said could be. One thing is for sure, they are playing at a very high level right now against some decent offenses and they can get better. We shall see the rest of this season where they land in the greatest of all time.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Rumblin’. Please click their names and follow on twitter.

MDotySr – Buckeye defense looking like a top 10 professional defense

Scott – Buckeyes defense. Who woulda thought that would be the strong part of the team.

Ken – Ohio State’s defense – they are playing at a very high level right now

Stumblin – Offensive Coaching Staff

I’d be screaming mad too if I wasn’t pulling the staff together

Where to begin and what to say that hasn’t already been said about the offense right now? I know one thing that I have heard very little about except in my recent article Why Isn’t Ohio State’s Offensive Staff Meshing?

In the Very, Very Good (above) the ultimate improvement was a defensive staff that get’s it. From communication between Chris Ash and Kerry Coombs to Larry Johnson and Luke Fickell co-existing, they got it done over time. This offense is struggling for two reasons really, execution and play-calling.

The underlying issue is the staff of newbies haven’t hit their stride yet with the new play-caller Ed Warinner. There will be a time that they will get it together. You always hear the phrase that Rome wasn’t built in a day.

There’s a very good reason for Buckeye Nation expectations of this offense. It was a record setter last season with a back-up quarterback and an offensive coordinator who finally learned from his mistakes.

This staff has an opportunity to do some amazing things once they get it together. Execution will come as the staff has confidence in themselves. If that doesn’t happen this week, I will be back to discuss the staff in next week’s Bumblin’!

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Stumblin’.

MDotySr – The Buckeye’s lack of an Offensive Identity

Scott -The offense. Need to settle on JT, I mean, a QB.

Ken – Ohio State’s quarterbacks – a mixture of good plays and indifferent plays. Hopefully a focus on a starting QB helps.

Bumblin’ – Buckeye Nation Fans

Either or makes no difference, get behind whoever it is and enjoy the ride.

For some reason, I really knew deep in my heart that the fans would eventually take over the bad. It’s not a surprise mind you, but it’s one of those things that I had hoped would fix itself. You know, like the leaky faucet that eventually stops dripping?

The Buckeyes were a team that had an amazing problem at quarterback that everyone believed was a good problem to have. Never-mind the fact that the reason they are even in this position is because of the next-man-up principle. JT stepped up because of Braxton’s injury and then Cardale stepped up because of JT’s injury.

The latter won three games on the road and led the Buckeyes to a National Title. That’s some pretty elite level third string work especially considering Cardale’s history with that staff. We as fans know backwards and forwards what happened and yet in the back of our minds we also know that JT is probably one of the best to ever play at Ohio State.

The problem with knowing that is ultimate here and is where Buckeye Nation is faltering. They are questioning Coach Meyer to the extent of believing he’s losing his mind sticking with Cardale here. Forget the fact that almost every single one of you has said if Cardale is good enough to lead them to the title, he is good enough to be the starter.

My how the mighty have fallen! Let him struggle to produce since Va Tech and fans immediately go to JT and then call Coach Meyer crazy for sticking with Cardale. I have had a close friend suggest that Coach made promises to Cardale after last season. I for one don’t believe for a minute that he promised Cardale anything and it definitely wouldn’t supersede the promise he made to JT when he committed!

I am kidding about that last statement. I believe in today’s age it would be too difficult for a coach to make a promise other than you will have a chance to compete for playing time. There’s a reason most of the true freshmen in his best class since being here are being brought along slowly. The fans need to get on one bandwagon, and that’s the one that trusts and supports the coaching staff’s decisions, especially Coach Meyers.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Bumblin’.

MDotySr -Ohio State’s coaching staff. The need to name a starting QB is evident. I think both players are not playing there best as they continue to look over there shoulder.

Scott -Ed Warriner

Ken – Ohio State’s offensive coaching staff – I don’t know what to say at this point.
