It’s kind of remarkable what a couple little tweaks and changes can do for a football team. The competition at quarterback has never been higher at Ohio State and that includes the era in which Coach Cooper struggled to decide between Joe Germaine and Stanley Jackson (I loved Stan BTW and still do!). The lack of turnovers was huge on Saturday and the appearance of JT Barrett in the red-zone clearly sparked the team and the fans. Let’s get rolling with the two very good.

Could ultimately be the deciding factor in a playoff run with all three taking snaps

There comes a time in a man’s life . . , yadda yadda yadda!! Most experts will tell you that utilizing the two QB system will usually end in disaster because for the most part you end up losing the confidence of one of the players and by that time the team is so suse to th system it cannot recover from it.

Coach Meyer has proven that it can work and he kicked the Buckeyes backside with it with Leak and Tebow. One thing is for sure and he has even said it.

You have to have two very special players and personalities to make it work.

I don’t think anyone can deny the friendship between the two and the level at which their competition has been taken.

Cardale Jones needed an opportunity to spread his wings and become the guy leading that offense. In one respect he has done that and now, regardless of what people think, he is still the guy. He just has a different offensive set to deal with in the red-zone and is very involved in the action. Cardale and JT are a unique duo and will now have an opportunity to repeat something that Coach Meyer has already had success at.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Rumblin’

MDotySr – The Ohio State Buckeye two/three QB system.

Ken – Urban’s Weekly Lessons: Last week he felt the need to address red zone offense and turnovers. Against Maryland they were 6-6 in the red zone and did not turn the ball over. Good work, Mr. Meyer.

Scott – The Ohio State offense. Three-headed QB is going to get the Bucks going. Feed the Z and throw it deep.

Joe – I feel bad for Penn State trying to decipher Ohio State’s game tape against Maryland and trying to figure out a game plan to stop the three-headed quarterback monster for Ohio State. The fact of the matter is — Three’s company didn’t just show up to tape a show, they performed at the highest level possible.

And for the first time all season the offense had a distinct flow. Their continuity on third down drastically improved. They moved the chains 31 times against Maryland. Most importantly, this offense took care of the football and were a perfect six for six in red zone opportunities.

Big plays helped turn things around Saturday

Where do I begin? I have actually been on the Buckeyes defense for a couple weeks and at other times I have said they have yet again lost the Silver Bullet tag. I am reversing course just a tad on that notion today for two reasons, they have several players that are Sunday players and are playing at an incredibly high level right now. Secondly, they are put into some formations that haven’t been conducive to a mobile quarterback.

The bad over the past couple weeks has been game planning by the defensive staff for the most part. They watch so much film and get ready for a “certain” thing and then get the opposing teams version of something completely different!

Where they have caught their stumblin has been with in game adjustments. It appeared as though they waited until halftime to make those adjustments and put the clamps on, but a tie ballgame with just over eleven minutes left in the third had people worrying. While the offense continued on the play-making path they had been on all day, the Silver Bullets stepped up with some big plays and put the hurting on several of the Terps.

Here’s hoping the staff continues to make some plays themselves with the right changes during the game.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Stumblin’

MDotySr – The Buckeyes putting a “complete” game together

Ken – Inconsistent o-line blocking. Zeke had 5 carries for 69 yd (14 ypc). He also had 12 carries for 13 yards ( 1 ypc).

Scott – ohio state’s ability to contain a mobile quarterback. Two weeks in a row the Silver Blanks got gashed

Joe – While blame can be placed on the Silver Bullets for giving up 250 yards rushing to a lowly Maryland team, I’m stumblin’ over the fact that Ohio State’s defensive staff didn’t make changes sooner to keep Perry Hills in check when it came to running the football.

Some credit has to go to Randy Edsall and his staff for seeing the weakness in the defense, but why did it take nearly three quarters for the Buckeye staff to decide to make Joshua Perry a quarterback spy to keep the otherwise lame quarterback in check?
If you take away Hills rushing yards, Maryland could not move the football on the ground.
Yes, a lot of the struggles in the run game have to be put on the shoulders of the Silver Bullets themselves. But I’ll take over pursuit to the quarterback from the defensive line every time and forcing a greenhorn quarterback to make plays than to not get pressure at all.

Edsall after a Bosa sack on Saturday

It’s not often that you find that the players a coach recruited, which are usually their “type” of players to begin with, undo you as a head coach. The Maryland program is searching for a new coach currently after firing Randy Edsall on Sunday. After thinking that he was the cause of his own demise initially, I am of the opinion that it happened because he recruited players that only cared about themselves.

Some of them get it, like Perry Hills who is probably very sad to see Edsall leave. If you take in what Joe has to say below and just reflect for a minute, you will see the full impact of why he is out of job and ultimately was really John Cooper’s undoing at Ohio State. There’s only so much you can do with entitled players and those who are actually probably just biding their time until they can cash in.

It’s really a sad state of affairs today and probably won’t be remedied until college pays players or the NFL develops a real minor league system for themselves. The CFL and arena league aren’t it!

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Bumblin’

MDotySr – Everyone (including me) who thought ttun would be a door mat this year after the UTAH loss

Ken – Silver Bullets losing their focus (again) by giving up long scoring plays and long QB runs. This trend’ish failure needs to stop.

Scott – the officials for the ridiculous call on Bosa

Joe – Listen up Maryland offensive lineman. Do you really want to talk about being spoiled, entitled and undeserving of a number one ranking? The fact of the matter is the reason your ball coach is on his way out and that the Maryland’s stock as a respectable program is dropping faster than 1929 stock has to do with your entitlement.

It’s your spoiled attitude that doesn’t want to put in the work for the head coach that gave you an opportunity to play at the highest level, while getting one of the best educations in the country.
Do you want to talk about undeserving?
The fact of the matter is that players on your team ultimately gave up on their coach and took advantage of your end of the “free ride.” Not living up to your end of the bargain can tell us so much about the character of a man.
Players in the Maryland program have a lot of growing up to do.
