Refs quick to call jump ball this year

Thump

Hating the environment since 1994
  • I noticed it a lot today in the GMU-UConn game but have noticed it throughout the entire season.

Refs seem very quick to call jump ball on rejected shots. Guys may roll on the gorund fighting for a ball and it takes them 3 seconds to make a call but on a rejected shot, they seem to call it even before a half second of shared ball time.

    Anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, I noticed it too. But then I wondered if that's always the case (I usually don't watch much college bb until the tournament).
I always thought the possession arrow rule was stoopid, but after watching this tournament I thought "Gee, all those jump balls would certainly be annoying." PErsonally I think they should do away w/ the possession arrow for the last 3 minutes of the game. Just have a jump ball after that.

Most people say the same thing about the arrow...it is a good idea tibs. I think what has happened over the past few years is that the refs are very, very anxious about altercations on the court, and they tend to call jump balls very quickly to prevent a potentially explosive situation. Not saying this is right, just what I have observed.

Exactly. And I think it has helped.

I prefer the current rule to the jump ball which gives too much of an advantage to a team with a great jumper. The one in the GM game was very quick - uncommonly so. It was an exception and not the norm and certainly no worse than non-calls on many other plays.

Not sure I like the new rule that if the offense has the arrow they don't get time back on the clock. They are exchanging the possesion arrow for the ball and should get the same 35 seconds the D gets.
