Prep Football Notebook: How to describe Harding's Rod Smith? 'Great'
By Nick West
of The News-Sentinel

There's a plethora of adjectives to describe Harding running back Roderick Smith - beast, force, monster, Adrian Peterson? was beast mentioned?

The 6-foot-3, 214-pound junior touched up the Class 4A Bishop Dwenger Saints for 202 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries on Friday night and drew the praise of Saints coach Chris Svarczkopf.

?Rod Smith is a great football player,? he said. ?He's everything they say he is.?

A beast?

Saints safety Tyler Eifert seems to agree. Smith broke away from the defense and was galloping down the sidelines but was caught and pushed out of bounds by Eifert, who angled across the field and dove to get enough of Smith to knock him out of bounds.

Smith ended up with 41 yards and likely would have scored if it wasn't for Eifert.

?You think he's bottled up in the backfield and he just emerges out of nowhere,? Eifert said. ?You've got to go up and make the play. He's a big back and hard to bring down. He had a great game.?

Harding back can run into history

In reach
Harding junior Rod Smith has 3,580 rushing yards. He could break school, SAC, area and state rushing records by the end of his career.
School record : Tarvar Baskerville (1993-96), 3,889 yards
SAC record : Ray Byers, Wayne (2004-07), 5,328 yards
Area record : Brandon Robinson, Heritage (1995-98), 7,303 yards
State record : Otis Shannon, Cathedral (1997-2000), 7,560 yards

There seems to be no conflict between Harding?s team goals and the potential individual conquests of junior running back Rod Smith.

If Smith does well, the team wins. If the Hawks keep winning, Smith can reach some lofty career rushing records in the school, the SAC, the area and the state.

At this point, the only thing Smith needs to set rushing records seems to be playing more games. So, Smith needs help from his teammates to keep the wins coming in the postseason, which extends the amount of games he could play over the next two seasons.

?He will get his 20 to 30 carries a game, and it is up to him to gain the yardage,? Harding coach Sherwood Haydock said.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Smith, who rushed for 1,885 yards as a freshman, 1,200 as a sophomore and 495 so far as a junior, enters a big Week 4 matchup against Class 2A top-ranked Bishop Luers (and its three straight shutouts) with 3,580 career yards.

He is 309 yards away from Tarvar Baskerville?s school record of 3,889 rushing yards. And with a strong senior season, Smith could reach Wayne?s Ray Byers? SAC record of 5,328.

And whenever Smith wants to compare his mind-boggling numbers, all he has to do is call up another chart-topping junior in Fort Wayne and good friend ? Bishop Luers? Deshaun Thomas.

Thomas (1,453 points) is on his way to becoming the top career scorer in the city (1,823) and could challenge Damon Bailey?s state record of 3,134.

Besides the pursuit of career records, Smith and Thomas have a lot in common with state championship rings (Smith as a freshman and Thomas last year as a sophomore), and they played on the same AAU basketball team a few years ago.

?So far, he has been dominating the city in basketball, and I have been dominating the city in football,? Smith said. ?We like to brag (to each other), but it is all love.?

By Trieu...Iowa has offered. Has been invited to a game at OSU but has not been able to make it yet. Says he will likely make OSU's camp this summer. Georgia and Oklahoma are also sending mail.

Hawks back sets another school mark | The Journal Gazette

Rod Smith?s three touchdown runs of at least 55 yards spurred his 300-yard, record-setting performance and Harding?s 39-13 victory over visiting Concordia on Friday.
Smith, a junior, already became the Hawks? all-time rushing leader this season. His 300 yards rushing on 26 carries is the school?s single-game record.
Smith had touchdown runs of 55, 60 and 95 yards, all in the second half.

Harding junior headed to Ohio State?- The Journal-Gazette

Harding junior headed to Ohio State?

Signing day next year could very well end up with Harding junior Rod Smith signing on the dotted line with Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have been high on Smith, who will become the city's all-time leading rusher next year, since he was a freshman.

The only reason they haven't offered Smith a scholarship is because of his academics, which caused Smith to miss a couple of basketball games last season.

But Ohio State reaffirmed its desire to have Smith part of the program in a couple of years with a recent e-mail to Harding coach Sherwood Haydock.
It was from assistant coach Dick Tressel.

Part of it read: "Coach - Our offensive staff just watched tape of one the best rbs in the nation - Rod is at the TOP!!"

Smith seems very interested in Ohio State as well and would probably commit once the scholarship offer comes.
