Zeke's Monster Day is Just Going Back to an Old Buckeye Tradition: Feed the Beast

The best way to win a game is by the surest way. At Ohio State, that’s always been handing the ball off to a running back and letting him go to work.

In a day and age of spread offenses and pass-happy, quarterback-heavy systems, the tradition of powerful running backs who can carry a team in need has not faded away in Columbus.

Whether it be the traditional backs out of the I-formation like Archie Griffin or Eddie George or the new-school style of Carlos Hyde or Ezekiel Elliott from shotgun, the result is the same: Feed the beast and let him eat.

Saturday’s 34-27 win for Ohio State over Indiana was reminiscent of one of those games. Not only did the Buckeyes ride their workhorse running back, but Elliott did something that put him in rare company.

“I think I tied Byars for the second most,” Elliott said after the game.

Zeke’s 274 rushing yards against the Hoosiers tied him for second all-time on the OSU single-game rushing record with Keith Byars. The running back set the record, since broken by Eddie George, in 1984 in a win over Illinois in which he scored five touchdowns to help OSU come from behind to defeat the Illini.

Byars and Elliott did it in different ways, but the end result was the same.

“It’s just an honor to be able to be mentioned with those guys, with the great running back pedigree at Ohio State,” Elliott said. “I’m just honored to be able to go and continue that legacy.”

If you're reading this, you probably know by know: Ezekiel Elliott returned to his playoff level on Saturday and ran roughshod over the Indiana Hoosiers.

The St. Louis beast finished with 23 carries for 274 yards and three second-half touchdowns. Simply put, the Hoosiers had no answer for the man.

On Saturday, Elliott was named Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week. Zeke is the ninth Buckeye to earn the award since 2004.
