Rate a Position....Part 3..WR

OSUScoonie12

Hall of Fame
OK, Here is the next one guys, WR...go at it.

Best WR: Jarret - he may not be playing this year but he is still the best WR.

Overrated WR:
Samardzija - He honestly is not that great, just a great QB to make him look good.

Underrated WR: Hardy - alot of people outside the B10 don't know who this guy is. Led Indiana in receiving yards and one of top WR in the B10.

Best WR - Jarrett, USC. Size, speed, body control and hands.

Overrated - Steve Smith, USC. I think he got decent numbers in a high-powered offense with great players at all of the other skill positions.

Underrated - Jason Hill, Washington State. He gets some recognition, but nowhere near the hype that other top receivers with similar numbers receive.

edit - I don't think Breaston is a very good receiver, but I think most people only give him credit for being a good return man.

Agree on Jarret and Hardy, but I don't think Samardzija is overrated -- he earned the pub he got.

My pick for overrated would be Sidney Rice, from South Carolina, who will join a long, long line of kids who reap the benefits of Spurrier's offense, then do jack once they get to The League (tm).

Get the asbestos, boys. I'll be toast when this hits.

Best? Could well be Jarret... or it could be Ted Ginn

Most under rated? How about Gonzales? He's been buried behind all the press for Edwards, Breaston, Ginn, Holmes and Alphabits of Note Dame.

Most over rated? Could well be a toss up between Ginn and Breaston. Both can burn you one second and hand the ball to you the next. Either one has the potential to turn any game they're in. Both have benefitted from having other great receivers around them, but the spotlight will squarely be on both this season.

I personally think that Ginn's mind was on his father last year. He spent much of the first half of the season in a fog. IF his mind is in the game, IF he runs his routes close to the way Holmes and Jenkins ran theirs there's no one in the college game can touch him.

Best: Calvin Johnson. Has everything you would want in an reciever, except the right team to get him the ball. [Jarrett is a close second]

Overrated: Jeff Samardjiza. He has good size but I think the system is more the culprit than individual skill.

Steve Breaston is a close second.

Underrated: James Hardy [Indiana], Dorien Bryant [Purdue], and Chansi Stucky [Clemson]

Did Ginn live up to the hype last year? No, I'll give you that, especially at the beginning of the season, but compared to Breaston Ginn is lights out, it is not even close for who is more over rated between the two of them.

Especially when you consider their production last year in proportion to the hype. They were both supposed to be about equal as far as talent and game breaking ability right. They both were behind a solid #1 receiver in Avant and Holmes. Ginn had 51 receptions for 803 yards and 4 TDs. Breaston had 26 receptions for 291 yards and 2 TDs. Is there really even a comparison?

That's a solid argument that one year ago at this time, Breaston was far more overrated than Ginn. But as was commented earlier, Breaston is generally not nearly as highly rated as Ginn is as a receiver today.

You would see a similar disparity in their careers numbers if they played an equal number of games, but I doubt we'll see Ginn Jr in the S&G in 2007.

Where the stats really become an apple/oranges comparison is KO returns. Ginn splits time with other returners with OSU's "diamond formation," while Breaston is "the guy." Projected to an equal number of games, Ginn would still have fewer than 2/3rds the number of KO returns that Breaston would.
