QB Kirk ‘Nightmare On’ Herbstreit (Frosted Quips, Afraid of THE Lunatic Fringe)

I'm hoping by going on this cruise, that I'm going to have this experience of rational, sane Ohio State people to give me hope that there is still civility among the Ohio State fanbase.

Don't forget your fucking hat.

He calls about 7 hours of sitting on a chair (2 hours of pre-game, game and 2 hours of post game) lotta work. He may have done some other stuff. Say 12 hours total. I am sure he didn't do much day before or after. So, how is it that 12 hours of Ohio Stat football is rough?

Two things.

During the bowl game against Okie State, it wasn't so much the tirade against Ohio State that blew my mind. It was that they kept making allegations against Ohio State and calling for Andy Geiger and Jim Tressel to be fired when they knew the NCAA had found no wrong doing on the substantive issues Clarett had raised. Recall that the NCAA reviewed most of these issues twice before it was all over. They claimed that Ohio State was a program out of control. Basically said that a player was being arrested every week or so, etc. Meanwhile, at Iowa, Penn State, USC, etc, etc., much bigger problems were ignored and continue to be ignored to this day.

I used to have so much respect for Herbstreit. I lost respect for him when he had an opportunity to speak up, even in a balanced way, and did not. The "he has to show fairness" argument just stretches so far. I'm sorry to say this about an alumnus, but in my mind, Kirk Herbstreit and Mark May are cut from the same cloth. It may be passive versus active aggression, but it's aggression nonetheless.

Herbstreit's antics this year crossed a line that I would have great difficulty forgetting. I cannot arrive at any other conclusion except that he is insanely jealous of the success that Terrelle Pryor has had and angry that Jim Tressel doesn't treat him like an honored advisor. I really don't think he understands that it is extremely unlikely that any highlight reel of Ohio State quarterbacks will ever include footage of Kirk Herbstreit, including the "epic victory" when Ohio State and TSUN tied.

I would prefer it if Kirk Herbstreit is never associated with another Ohio State broadcast again.

"What did Ohio State really do at the end of the day to warrant being up in the top 5 other than not lose their bowl game and beating Arkansas?"

He should have kept his full mouth shut. The "Wisconsin beat tOSU so you have to put them ahead of them" excuse is the biggest steaming pile of dogshit I've heard in a long time.
I can sort of buy the "Wisconsin beat Ohio State" argument. Wisconsin played a higher-ranked opponent in the Rose Bowl and lost by only two points, and Ohio State played a lower-ranked opponent in the Sugar Bowl and won by only five points. You could argue that Wisconsin and Ohio State had essentially "even" performances in their respective bowl games (narrow loss to #3 team, narrow win over #8 team), and that the deciding factor should not have been bowl game results but rather head-to-head during the regular season.

Okay, so if Herbie really felt that way, then he should have voted like the Plain Dealer's Doug Lesmear, who put Wisconsin 5th and Ohio State 6th.

If Herbie didn't think that Ohio State was a top-5 team, then fine, I can buy that argument, it has at least some merit ... even if Herbie genuinely felt that Oklahoma (another BCS bowl winner, albeit over a UConn team that should have been playing a MAC squad) was a better team, then maybe #7 would still be justifiable ... but as I have mentioned in previous posts, there was simply no justification for ranking Ohio State #9. None.

No AQ team that finished the season with a 12-1 has ever been ranked lower than #8 in the AP final poll (and that was last year's phony UC squad that got ape-raped by Florida in the Sugar Bowl) ... and the average AP final poll ranking of all AQ teams with 12-1 records is 3.7 ... which essentially means that Herbie thought that this year's Ohio State team was the worst 12-1 team ever. So like I said, Herbie's vote for #9 is in no way justified or defensible.

Which is what is so funny to me (what Steve said is totally correct) about Ken Doll. He can sit there and talk shit and say he isn't jealous or bothered by this or that or whatever, and he is so full of shit his skin is turning...er, never mind. The bottom line is if Archie Griffin or Eddie George criticized a current RB, or if Spielman talked about a LB, or if Tatum talked about a safety (God rest his soul) or if Bill Willis talked about a DL (God rest his soul) or if Winfield talked about a DB, or shit if Tom Skladany talked about a punter...you can bet your ass they would listen to at least a certain extent, and you can also bet your ass that you wouldn't see "fake Buckeye" uttered anywhere ever by anyone. Ken Doll thinks he should be in that type of company, and he is SOOOOO far away from that there is no accurate unit of measure to assess it. The bottom line is at the end of the day, he has a high paying, high profile analyst job, and he is buttsore about the fact that no one in the Ohio State community gives a shit about what he thinks...period.

I'm trying to figure out if this clown actually did address the team this past offseason. The crying, the pouring out of his heart, etc had to be a fictional piece of work.

I wonder if he brought his kids in with him (decked out in OSU gear). And then he and his wife did leapfrogs across the room. That's the only way I would believe he is a true Buckeye and not some hack thinking he's full of grandeur because of his job.

But only if it was televised on some sort of sports network. Because then we'd know it was real.

Absolutely. But, the key thing is here, that none of those guys have a very loud microphone sitting in front of them on a weekly basis (yes, Spielman is an announcer, but it's different). Herbert is one of the "voices of CFB" and to use it the way he has is just shameful. Look at Desmond Howard for fuck's sake. Yes, he's an annoying little sprite, but did you see him out there bashing scUM, the scUM coaches or getting into a pissing match with any scUM players when their "practice gate" was going on? Hell, at least he has some cachet at scUM...he's one of their all-time greats. Did he go on national TV and say that if he was a parent, he'd never let his child go play defense for Rich Rodriguez? Herbert was a one year starter (and not a very good one) on some mediocre Buckeye teams. He has no cachet. There's impartiality, then there's going so over the top to try to show impartiality that you look like you actually have a vendetta against your alma mater.

*Herbstreit's first year @ espn*

part of his interview:

"Kirk," said an ESPN executive, "this is what will happen if you ever say nice things about Ohio State!"

"yes, daddy," moaned Herbstreit......

That is what really happened~~~ feel "sorry" for the guy.

Exactly...my point was merely that it is all more exacerbated by the fact he has no "cred" like the other guys would. And true, they are not on ESPN (other than Spiels), but Archie has a high profile position, as do many other former Buckeyes...if they want to make their opinions known, they can, they just know how to accomplish it without looking like Ken Doll does.
