QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

All due respect to JT, what is happening on his side of the ball right now is due to scheme and personnel. I cannot think of a time in my life that the weapons have been as balanced as they are today.

Receivers, running backs and the QB are all highly capable of doing significant damage on any play. Urb has talked about how difficult that is to shut down and we're seeing the fruit of this staff's efforts.

That said, hat off to the kid. Hand the keys to a F1 car to a kid doesn't mean he can drive it. This kid is driving it at a very high level.

I pretty much agree. People forget that the reason Braxton didn't put up bigger numbers than he did last year was b/c he got hurt. When you combine Braxton and Guiton's numbers you get 55 total touchdowns, which is basically J.T.'s pace. Yes, we will throw for more yards than we did last year, but that is in part b/c of improved weapons in the passing game and a running game that isn't on last year's level.

But to also agree with you, not trying to take anything away from J.T. He is performing better than anyone could have expected. But the system is definitely in place right now for any good QB to put up huge numbers.

Barrett is a combination of system and skill. He's producing at a level that rivals Troy Smith in 2006. What impresses me the most with this young man is his humility. He has taken this team and run with it. I love Braxton and what he has done for us, but I think it's Barretts team now. This is no slight to Braxton, but a tip of the cap to Barrett. He's special.

05 had 3 first round picks at WR, another 2nd rounder and a 4th rounder. Good lord.

Exactly. The personnel is certainly a step-up from what Braxton worked with the last 3 years and the scheme is taking hold, but it is nowhere near that group in terms of high-end talent. Now I could give the argument that the depth and variety of talent puts it near that group.

But as it relates to JT, there is no way to take away what he does for this team. He maximizes the talent and skill sets we have here by putting the ball in a place where the talent can take over. Plus we saw that his legs can take over a game when defenses respect his arm and Elliott. As for the Heisman...he deserves to be in the conversation. Prescott fell quite a bit today. And Gordon made a huge leap. To me, it is Mariota clearly in the lead, with JT and Gordon nipping at his heels. Still 3 more games to go and it will be fun to watch. In any event, the fact JT is in this conversation blows my mind. Playing his tail off and improving every week.

Uh, I'd gladly take the 2006 receiving core and backfield over this one.

He broke one of Troys records right? That's why I'm bringing up that team.

I think I might take 05 too.

'Corps'

Now that we have that out of the way, the proper comparison would be Troy, et al in '04.

Barrett is on an easy pace for FIFTY touchdowns through the B1G CG. And it's his first year. He's completely redefining the QB position at Ohio State.

Get back to me after Barrett and Co break the single season scoring record THIS year, then break it again each of the next two seasons.

It doesn't rival Troy, and I'm NOT taking anything away from Troy. Barrett is on a whole other level. JT is outperforming as a redshirt freshman what Troy did as a redshirt senior.

Best QB in Ohio State history. I'll say it right now.

The game has changed so much that it's hard to make direct comparisons with stats. I mean, we have people like Cam Newton going to the NFL, shattering Peyton Manning' rookie records and throwing 4000yds ... but just not being good enough. The rules changes have affected defenses a lot, and the offensive side has continued to evolve past defensive scheming.

This is the first time since Troy that we've had a QB who can dictate games with his arm.
Pryor and Brax were fun to watch. And Braxton always went all out for the team... but every year it's the same story in the off season, expecting them to have the same sudden improvement Troy did when he stopped being a scrambler and instead used his legs to extend plays and make throws. Necessity is the mother of invention, and gifted athletes at QB rarely need to make that leap... they can win 9 games out of 10 with their legs and athleticism.

When JT slays skunk bears every year, I'll put him alongside Troy.
