Even at Indiana, Kevin Wilson Was a Fan of J.T. Barrett
J.T. Barrett was 2-0 as a starter against Kevin Wilson.
Kevin Wilson finished his Indiana tenure 0-6 against Ohio State, with two of those losses coming to Buckeye quarterback J.T. Barrett in 2014 and 2016.
In the 2014 meeting, Barrett completed 25-of-35 passes for 302 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 78 yards on 20 carries, leading OSU to a 42-27 win over the Hoosiers.
A year ago, Barrett did not have his best game against Indiana, throwing for just 93 yards on 9-of-21 passing with one touchdown and one interception. He did add a season-high 137 yards rushing on 26 carries in the 38-17 win over IU.
Despite the rough outing, Wilson was effusive in his praise of Barrett immediately following that 2016 contest.
"I think that in my opinion, from afar, I think that’s the best quarterback in college ball," he said last October. "Some of these guys have some stats, and I’m not saying it because he’s in our league, I’m not about helping our league because it’s good for us, but when you watch a kid play, that kid went through a lot.
"He was the premier player in the country two years ago when he got injured, went through last year, he is one of the best players, one of the best teammates. I’m not in their locker room but I’m sure he’s a phenomenal leader and that’s why those young players are playing so well. He might have been off today, but that’s a good football player. I think J.T. is an awesome football player."

What is J.T. Barrett working on during spring practice?
No matter how impressive the résumé is already, there are undoubtedly improvements to be made.
J.T. Barrett is the first to admit that he has areas of his game that need to be addressed during spring practice. But like the Ohio State offense as a whole, it's important to note that the veteran quarterback isn't broken.
The Buckeyes scored points in bunches -- with one notable exception, in the College Football Playoff. And Barrett has now accounted for 100 touchdowns in his career for a program that wouldn't have even been in contention for the national title without his presence at the most important spot on the field.
But what can he do to take another step forward and end his run with Ohio State with a championship? In the first in our series looking at the to-do list for the Big Ten's top individual returners and some of their key statistics, let's begin with a player who's already among the most decorated performers the Big Ten has ever seen.

The deep ball: The inconsistencies that hampered the Buckeyes at times -- and the collapse against Clemson -- were a collective effort, and Barrett was often low on the list of problems. The offensive line struggled to protect him, the receivers had issues with their routes and dropped a few too many passes, and even the coaching staff put Barrett in tight spots with the playcalling. Nevertheless, the spotlight always winds up on the quarterback, and it's no secret that Barrett is being asked every day in spring camp to help stretch the field better. Arm strength has never been one of his best attributes, but ranking just No. 76 in the nation with 29 completions of 20 yards or more isn't going to cut it for Urban Meyer. During open portions of practice, new quarterbacks coach Ryan Day has been emphasizing those deep throws and finding new ways to teach how they should be delivered. If the young receivers can get to the right spots this fall, expect Barrett to be able to find them.

J.T. Barrett is on pace to be Ohio State's most prolific passer ever and one of its top five rushers ever. In other words, he's on pace to be Ohio State's greatest quarterback of all time. With seven more touchdowns to his credit, he will have accounted for more touchdowns than any player in Big Ten history. Yes, more than even Jabrill Peppers. Barrett's limitations last season were numerous, but Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson went to work this spring to eliminate those limitations, and by their accounts they are very happy with the progress.
Well, considering that J.T. Barrett has twice been named the Big Ten's Quarterback of the Year, and once won the Silver Football, there is no question which Buckeye quarterback should receive the most votes, accolades, and awards this season. However, should something happen to him, and quarterback in this offense should put up the numbers and wins to receive some acclaim.
Perfect last year J.T. Barrett was not. Improvement this spring he showed. Back in effect the deep ball was. A quarterback competition fans wanted to see. One they didn't get. Hrrrmmm. It was necessary the coaches thought not. Their guy Barrett is. Used to it people should just get.
I mean, come on. If J.T. Barrett isn't outstanding this year in Kevin Wilson's offense, there's only so much more defending of him that I can do.
Honestly, everybody. How many teams can say their starter may be the best quarterback in school history, and yet the two guys behind him are likely better pro prospects? This is an unprecedented time in Ohio State football. The truly amazing part is that there are people out there who will tell you that 2018 commit Emory Jones is the best of them all.

I love me some J.T. Barrett. The kid is a baller, obvious hard-worker, and leader. But best QB in Buckeye history?
Maybe. Kind of depends on the data used to make such claims. As a pro style QB? That honor remains with Art Schleister - about the only honor that does. As a college run and gun style? There's no question he's been great, but better than Brax or Troy? Only if all you're looking at are total stats
He caught a break with Brax's injury, an injury that gave him two years as starting QB. It's to his credit that when called upon he was ready and performed to Heisman candidate levels. He came back from his own injury and succeeded despite coaching/OC problems. He's been one hell of a player, no denying that. But "the best" in Buckeye history? Maybe.

We will find out pretty early this year what he is capable of in terms of getting rid of the ball quickly, hitting receivers in stride, throwing receivers open, throwing the ball away when there is nothing there, not taking sacks at critical times. Last year the horrible play calling masked any opportunity to evaluate how good he really is as a passing QB.

I feel like this is 100% spot-on. JT is a baller and has killed it here, but this year will be a really good measure. I personally think JT will have a field day in this offense and return to the form of what we thought we would see from JT. To be clear, when JT was performing at his best, he was at a Heisman caliber. He will be back there this year and remind us why he is so damn good. I know I am being bold but I really do feel that.

If Wilson incorporates the TEs more often, that is going to automatically help JT due to the intermittent routes they'll be involved in which is where JT makes most of his throws. Where he's struggled is the deep throws which I'm not sure he'll improve on unless he changes his mental game. If Wilson and Ryan Day can do that, they're incredible coaches.

If he can't be a credible threat at 40 yards, it has implications for his opponents defensive strategies.
