Press Conference Question

MaliBuckeye

1) Be A Man.
Apologies on this- feel free to peel it into the G. Smith thread if necessary.

We've talked a lot about how these press conferences have been "botched" (particularly the "I hope he doesn't fire me" initial one), but several discussions I've had today make me think that it's not the pressers that are the major source of frustration- it's what is being addressed (the scandals). With that, it seems there's only so much that can be done.

They do a public presser, and get crucified for "incompetence"; they do a press release and they're "not being open"; they do a video response, and it's not "authentic"; they do a limited invite press event, and they're violating constitutional rights.

So, the question: What would the "perfect" press conference today have looked like?

I'm not defending the way this has been dealt with at all, and have my own set of frustrations. I just can't seem to put my finger on what's "off", and hope that your thoughts on this will help give me some clarity.

great questions and thoughts

to me, a perfect press conference would be one that accomplishes the following:

1. exhibits an air of calm
2. exhibits an air of full disclosure
3. gets in front of the issue so as to put control in OSU's hands
4. explains the reason for OSU not being able to get in front of stuff before
5. isolates the "cancer" and surgically removes it (players or administrators kicked out of program)
6. announces new people that will run the ship that are beyond reproach and repute

so in order to do this, the press conference must be Gee announcing that Gene Smith is gone and the entire compliance staff is gone. Also, the Herron, Posey, and Hall are gone. There is an immediate zero tolerance policy for anything on anyone. There will be a new Director of Compliance that will serve as the Athletic Director too until we hire a new one. The search for an AD will begin immediately and should be done within 2 months.

I think the biggest mistake/comment that was made was when Gene said this was an isolated incident..... In hindsight why make that comment at all. The best thing to say is we are dealing appropriatley with the information we have now and will continue to monitor and investigate as we always have.

That isolated incident comment really makes it look like compliance and his head is completely in the sand. It may or may not.

At this point OSU, the atheletic department, and coaches need to send a very clear message that this activity and poor oversight stops and stops yesterday. His pressers show that we are still in reactive mode and that we do not have control of the situation. That is what I would think would make a good presser. Let the audience know that we are in control of the situation, have a plan to make things better, and have been open with the NCAA about all that it has found.
