Well, the official polls aren't out yet, but they can be put in this thread. I've updated my poll for this week.

Feel free to criticize, but at least understand my criteria. I rank teams based on results for this season only; it doesn't matter what anybody did before this season. The entire body of work for the season is considered equally, I don't care when a team loses. I factor in margin of victory somewhat, but a 24-point win is pretty much the same to me as a 54-point win. Beating true cupcakes means virtually nothing.

01. Texas
02. USC
03. Alabama
04. Miami
05. Penn State
06. LSU
07. Va. Tech
08. Georgia
09. tOSU
10. Oregon
11. Notre Dame
12. Florida
13. Texas Tech
14. Florida State
15. W. Va.
16. Auburn
17. UCLA
18. Wisconsin
19. Fresno St.
20. TCU
21. Ga. Tech
22. Colorado
23. scUM
24. Oklahoma
25. Minnesota

I think the real polls will look very similar to that as far as the teams immediately in front of us go.

That why this weekend's SEC games are huge for us

LSU vs Alabama

Auburn vs UGA

We need the SEC runner up to be well behind us in the BCS...we should all be big Bama fans from here on out.

LSu will be ranked ahead of Penn State in the human polls, but they shouldn't be.

Penn St. has defeated NW'ern with a late 4th-down conversion, top-10 tOSU, Minny, and top-20 Wiscy. Their loss was a last-second one on the road to a now-ranked scUM team.

LSU beat top-15 Florida, top-20 Auburn in OT on a missed FG, and 4-loss Arizona St. on a 4th and long bomb. They lost to a Tennessee team that's now 3-5.

Penn State's wins are at least as impressive as LSU's, and their loss is not as bad.

These are the adjustments that most voters don't make.

We need the SEC runner up to be well behind us in the BCS...we should all be big Bama fans from here on out.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

If Bama loses to both LSU and Auburn, we're also OK as far as the SEC competing for the at-large BCS bid. We just don't want Bama to split their next two games. I explained this in more detail in the BCS thread, at the bottom of page 1. :wink2:

I think Notre Dame will be ranked another spot or two higher, only because they are Notre Dame...and because even though Tenn. is having a downright aweful season, they are still Tenneessee in the pollsters eyes. Again this is bullshit though because who has Notre Dame beat? Have they beaten any top 25 teams besides scUM?

7 through 9 make me sick to my goddamn stomach.

VT has played exactly 1 team in the BCS top 25, got them at home at night and got just absolutely biatch slapped by that team.

How in the fuck do you play 1 team a year, lose to them and stay in the top 10?

Are the ignorant ass pollsters that impressed by running up the score on the Dukes and Marylands of the world? Obviously so.

Give me the computers any day of the week, they don't have egos or agendas. The pollsters spend all year defending their pre season picks..its just disgraceful.

True. But, remember, popular opinion is, if the computer doesn't agree with the humans, there must be a problem with the program.

For what it's worth, VT beat WVU at WVU.

VaTech beat Georgia Tech, who is ranked, and they gave West Virginia, another ranked team, their only loss.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, has only the victory over scUM as a win vs. a ranked opponent. And they lost to MSU, who is unranked. How are they number 7?

Well, the rankings are starting to sort into groups. Winning out is in our control, but this suggests that it may not be enough unless we get some losses above us.

We are, on average,
  • Ranked two places lower than teams ranked #6 - #9.
  • Ranked almost 4 places higher than #12 - #14.
This suggests that winning out makes it exceptionally unlikely that we go any lower.

If we win out,
  • Penn State losing makes this unnecessary speculation; we are in a BCS bowl.
  • Notre Dame is unlikely to lose to such weak competition. Even if SOS does go down sharply, they will have played a top 20 SOS and it seems likely that they will end up in a BCS bowl.
  • Virginia Tech is unlikely to lose again. It would help if they did.
  • Georgia may lose to Auburn or to Alabama in the SEC championship game. We really need them to lose and get out of the way
Realistically, if we win out but Penn State doesn't lose to MSU, we really need some help to get into the BCS. Even if we get help, it looks like a mess.

What is in our control is what requires our focus. Make no mistake, the computers are our best allies in this battle.

We must win the remaining two games as convincingly as possible. The defense has to continue to be rock steady. The offense must also continue to play well. Two more 40+ point performances would be very helpful to moving the human voters and the computers.
