Los Angeles - A wheelchair-bound Los Angeles woman, who has repeatedly filed lawsuits over access for the disabled, got up and ran after police arrested her for fraud, authorities said on Thursday.

Laura Lee Medley, 35, had sued in at least four California cities over injuries she claimed she sustained while trying to navigate her wheelchair, before she was suspected of fraud.

Medley, who claimed to be paralysed from a drunk driving accident, was tracked to Las Vegas where police there took her into custody and then, when she complained of medical issues, to a local hospital, Long Beach prosecutor Belinda Mayes said.

'Miracle'
"She gets to the hospital and while she's waiting for an examination, she gets up from the chair and runs," Mayes said.

"Somebody remarked, 'That's where the great miracle occurred'."

Medley sprinted through the hospital corridors but was quickly apprehended by police and booked pending extradition to San Bernardino, southern California, where she is facing charges of filing false documents, attempted grand theft and insurance fraud.
Medley has sued the cities of Long Beach and South Pasadena and counties of San Bernardino and Riverside over various injuries she claimed she sustained in her wheelchair. She was also being sought on arrest warrants by the states of Oregon and Washington, Mayes said.

I got this SPAM yesterday, they claim "tort costs reached a record $260 billion in 2004, or approximately $886 per person". Without her frivolous lawsuits it may only be $500 per person next year.

Welcome to the Institute for Legal Reform Email Newsletter!
The Institute for Legal Reform (ILR) is an advocacy group working to end lawsuit abuse. ILR is a national campaign of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, with the critical mission of making America's legal system simpler, faster, and fairer for everyone.

New Study Shows Rise in Tort Costs
U.S. tort costs reached a record $260 billion in 2004, or approximately $886 per person, according to the U.S. Tort Costs and Cross-Border Perspectives: 2005 Update from the Tillinghast business of Towers Perrin.
The study shows that:
  • The $260 billion tort costs for 2004 is almost twice the amount spent in 1990. This surpassed the previous record set in 2003 by $16 billion.
  • U.S. tort costs grew 5.9% in 2004 -- and a total of 11.4% over the two year period of 2003- 2004.
  • As a percentage of economic output, U.S. Tort costs exceed those of other industrialized countries by a sizeable margin.
  • Tort costs are projected to rise sharply in the next few years ... to nearly $315 billion by 2007, outpacing the expansion of the overall economy.
How Does this Impact You?
Frivolous lawsuits help drive up the costs of America's tort system. Increased tort costs come in the form of higher prices for goods and services. These lawsuits cripple businesses, put employees out of work, and raise consumer prices!
Companies are hesitant to do business in a state with a reputation for lawsuit abuse. Lost business means fewer jobs and stagnant wages. And doctors quit providing medical care or leave the state because they can't afford insurance.
With tort costs reaching nearly $3600 per year for an average American family of four, it is draining families' resources -- money that could be used to buy groceries, pay college tuition or cover healthcare costs.
