  • who gets to make the "official word" if this new 10th planet officially gets PLANET status? and who will rule whether or not Pluto gets to keep its PLANET status.. since there are publications saying it's not really one...???

I mean... if they ask in school... how many planets are there... right now... 8,9 and 10 could ALL be correct answers!!!!

Which one are you referring to? They announced two yesterday. One is smaller than Pluto and one is larger. Oh yeah, they found the larger one in an area where no one has really been looking, until now. Don't forget about the one found last year. One scientist thinks there could be another 1,000 Pluto-sized planets out there.

The other theory on this is that there are around another 12 or 14 larger (Earth / Mars sized) objects in eccentric orbits well beyond Pluto's orbit.

No matter, as long as we remain the 3rd stone from the sun -- all is right in the universe. Hope these new discoveries don't lead to more law suits from discombobulated psychics.

Here are New Scientist's articles on the 10th planet (larger than Pluto) and the high tally 23 planet theory.

The IAU will make an announcement as to whether this new object that is apparently larger than Pluto but more than twice Pluto's distance to the Sun, is a planet or not.

You would have to think it will qualify as a planet, as it is in a true orbit around the sun and larger than an acknowledged planet.

Logic would dictate that, but since when does logic matter?

I can forsee them saying something like "The new item will be named a planet, but in order to keep from confusing ourselves, Pluto will be downgraded to "Asteroid 1 of the Kuiper Belt".

Dig this, the new "planet" has an estimated surface temp of about 30 degrees celsius...ABOVE ABSOLUTE ZERO!!!

I think that we should downgrade the current Pluto to just a big iceball, call it Iceball P, and name the "new" planet Pluto. That way we can still have nine planets. All the science books will still be correct. And Pluto will still be the most distant planet in the solar system.
