PG Bruce Thornton (Official Thread)

Lol where's he going to go?

I just worry about transfers for our best players after this disaster of a season, frankly I don't even know how you unlearn these guys from assuming a double digit loss is in store every game. I don't think anyone is ready to go pro, Sensabaugh maybe but still think he needs another year and to show more responsibility with the ball in his hands. No real reason to think Thornton is going anywhere other than to another team to receive actual coaching and a supporting cast. But if we keep our incoming commits on board, we could keep everyone of importance for the promise of a potentially good season. I hate to sound so negative but this year has been as bad as it can get and I'm not saying anything that hasn't gone through the players heads (or at least I would assume).

no i hear you i just think too many people assume guys are gonna jump ship and I dont think thats the case. i have read some things that suggest everyone is coming back (even Brice) except for maybe an older guy or 2.

That's good to know, I think the nucleus of the guys we have paired with the class coming in could be a great team. I hope everyone is back except those graduating/out of eligibility, you just get nervous when the year is going this poorly and you can see the clear lack of enthusiasm from the team. Hopefully Bruce and Brice are back along with all the incoming commits.

I knew he was gong to right his own so when he came out with his personal issues. Thornton will be a captain next year I would book that. If Sensabaugh finds his anger and plays his defense for a year, he could end up a lottery pick. His scoring is that good when he's not forcing it.
I think 10-15 pounds of muscle on Okpara can make him a real problem in the paint. If we figured it how to implement a fervent zone scheme I think they'll all play better defense with a press added to it.

Spot on with each point. Thornton will come back as one of the best PGs in college ball. Brice is a stud if he improves his defense and doesn't feel like he is the only player capable of scoring on offense (the first 10 games or so he was incredible). Okpara seems to have hit a wall lately and/or is getting exposed by talented players like Edey, but I agree size is the biggest thing in the offseason...that and cutting out the easy fouls, he is about to foul out 5 minutes in every game lately lol. But I do think Okpara is going to be a force sooner rather than later down low.

I actually thought Felix was great yesterday. He's found a little lefty jump hook and communicating better on the alleyoops that he slammed home a couple. He's only played basketball for 4 years so there's tremendous upside there. We need a Diebler clone to come in and open it all up.

Oh yesterday he looked great I think, just the games leading up to that in January and February were shakey at times. But like you said, Felix hasn't played that long and I think the finished product there could be very good (I have raved about Okpara for the better part of the year and finally having an athletic big that guard the rim more effectively).

But I am pretty excited to see us infuse Middleton, Chatman and Royal with this freshmen class (and having Parks down low if Okpara gets in foul trouble). I know I have bitched about this team about as much as anyone during conference play, but to some extent a young team hitting a midseason wall is not that surprising...it is just seeing the talent of Thornton, Sensabaugh, Okpara and occasionally Gayle's potential versus results, but I think that could turn around in a big way with the guys we have coming in. From worst to first? A guy can hope.

"I thought he played aggressive and looked loose and confident," Holtmann said of his point guard. "He's had those moments throughout the year. He competes on both ends. ... The way Bruce has been kind of raised and brought up he is very much a two-way player. You can play him for 36 minutes and, if he's scoring the ball like he is, you know he's impacting the other end as well. His attention to detail – he's highly, highly detailed for a (freshman) and when his offensive game provides what it provided tonight, he really helps us at a high level."

"Every kid wants to get to the next level as quickly as they can. It has to be the right timing and right for them and right for their future," Holtmann said of Thornton. "Every kid wants that so I wouldn't want to necessarily put limitations on him but what I will tell you is I don't think he's going to be a foundational piece for us – he already is and he's a freshman. He really has kind of solidified himself, in a lot of ways, if not the face of the program, certainly one of the faces of the program. So he's going to be that for us moving forward."
