PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Guess who's back. Kosta Koufos hadn't played since March 2 but returned to action Thursday. He averages 5.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in 15.9 minutes.

"Kosta has done a great job of preparing himself, and now he's got to play basketball," Karl said. "I mean, his next growth is going to be in basketball instincts, basketball feel, basketball comfort zone, and how we got that done this season, over the summer ..."

Knee injury keeps Koufas sidelined against the Jazz
Posted: 03/24/2012

SALT LAKE CITY ? Nuggets forward Kosta Koufos did not play in Friday night's game at Utah, still dealing with a nagging knee injury. But he is on the road trip with the team and says he will get back in action before the seven-game road swing finishes.

"I'm pretty much day to day," Koufos said after the morning shootaround. "Other than that, I'm feeling a lot better. I just want to be able to play on the court and be 100 percent, and that's it."

Koufos has missed the past two games because of it. He's done some on-court work and says he's steadily improving but wants to feel more comfortable.

"I'm still going through that process," he said. "But it's very minor. It's just minor things, nothing serious."

Koufos still out. Nuggets center Kosta Koufos was not well enough to play for the fourth consecutive game. He has been dealing with a left knee strain. Koufos did go through some pregame drills on the court, so he's close to returning. At the start of the road trip, Koufos said he expected to be back in uniform before the end of the trip.

Guess who's back? Reserve center Kosta Koufos, battling knee pain, hadn't played since March 19. But the Ohio State product logged 15 minutes on Friday, scoring six points with six rebounds and blocking a shot.

"I thought Kosta gave us good minutes," said Karl, who had been critical of Timofey Mozgov after Denver's previous game at Toronto.

So Karl didn't play Mozgov at all on Friday, giving Koufos the reserve center minutes. JaVale McGee remained the starting center for the Nuggets.

"Playing defense, dunking, Kosta is a good player," Nuggets guard Ty Lawson said. "His knee hurts a little bit, so I respect what he's doing. He's a warrior for us. We need him to keep it going."

Koufos back, starts

Nuggets center Kosta Koufos missed some playing time with an knee injury, but is back in the lineup for Denver. In fact, Koufos started Friday night?s game against Phoenix and the Nuggets won.

Koufos played 18 minutes in that win and scored three points and grabbed eight rebounds. He took the start away from JaVale McGee, and according to reports out of Denver, it was head coach George Karl?s way of sending a message to McGee. He?s had a bit of an attitude since joining Denver.

In Koufos? first game back a week ago, he played 15 minutes and scored six points.

?I thought Kosta gave us good minutes,? Karl told Denver reporters. Karl has been at odds with two of his big men. Timofey Mozgov was in Karl?s doghouse two weeks ago.

The play of Denver?s big men, Koufos included, made trading Nene to Washington a possibility.

?Playing defense, dunking, Kosta is a good player,? guard Ty Lawson told Denver reporters. ?His knee hurts a little bit, so I respect what he?s doing. He?s a warrior for us. We need him to keep it going.?

Nuggets Koufos big man in denver playoff plan

The Denver Post

MINNEAPOLIS ? A year ago at this time, Kosta Koufos was on the end of Denver's bench. Now he's the starting center. The fourth-year center will play a key role in the upcoming playoff series against the Lakers because Denver needs its bigs to come up big.

There is no question the Lakers have one of basketball's best frontcourts. Koufos, along with Kenneth Faried, Al Harrington, JaVale McGee, Timofey Mozgov and maybe even Chris Andersen, will need to contribute. Koufos will be in charge of setting the tone.

"He's been great, man," teammate Arron Afflalo said. "He's got a high IQ, so he's a great position defender. He's smart, he's strong and he does the little things. He sets the screens, and he's not too demanding. He understands his role, and he becomes very valuable because of that."

In Thursday's regular-season finale at Minnesota, Koufos grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and had seven points. He has averaged 16.3 minutes per game this season.

A Last Chance for London
By VICTOR MATHER

While the United States men?s Olympic basketball team worries about replacing Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, a dozen other teams have a more pressing concern: qualifying for the Games in the first place.

Nine teams are already in the Olympic tournament, but there are three spots left. Starting Monday in Venezuela, 12 teams will vie for those places.

The favorite is probably Greece, which is ranked fourth in the world, behind the already qualified United States, Spain and Argentina. The team includes forward Kostas Papanikolaou, whom the Knicks took in the second round of the N.B.A. draft last week, and guard Vasileios Spanoulis, who once had a cup of coffee with the Houston Rockets. The American-born-raised-and-educated center Kosta Koufos, who has played for Ohio State, the Jazz, the Timberwolves and now the Nuggets, is out with an injury but could be ready for the Games.

Big Fish: Kosta Koufos looks to ride the wave in 2012-13
Denver Nuggets center spends summer returning to health, improving game
By Aaron J. Lopez, Nuggets.com, 8-13-12

Wearing a pair of size 17 snorkeling fins, Kosta Koufos found time to enjoy the clear blue water during a recent trip to the Bahamas.

His island adventure included swimming alongside sharks, but it was otherwise much less hazardous than trading elbows in the paint with other NBA big men.

?I wanted to get some ocean time,? Koufos said. ?It was nice.?

It was a well-deserved break considering that Koufos spent much of his summer in Denver working out in the weight room and on the Nuggets practice court.

Even in the Bahamas, the 7-footer made sure to stick to his routine.

?I couldn?t get away from the working out,? he said. ?It was a change of pace in a different setting. It was good for the mind.?

Though training camp remains more than six weeks away, Koufos is getting his mind and body ready for his fifth NBA season. With the Nuggets stocked with big men (JaVale McGee, Timofey Mozgov, Kenneth Faried and Anthony Randolph), he knows that playing time will be at a premium.

?It?ll be fun and exciting,? Koufos said. ?I look forward to it. Waking up every day, it?s going to be a battle, but that?s what I want.?

Koufos, 23, provided quality minutes in his first full season with the Nuggets in 2011-12. He started 24 games and averaged career highs in points (5.5), rebounds (5.4) and field-goal percentage (.599).

Koufos was particularly effective during a 14-game stretch from Feb. 4-March 2, averaging 7.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

?There?s no question that Kosta helped us win some games when we had injuries to our bigs,? Nuggets coach George Karl said. ?He?s one of the young guys who we hope can take another step forward next season.?

Breakout in store for Koufos
Denver center shows signs of becoming a force in 2012-13

You've heard all of the clich?s before.

"You can't teach height." "Big men take more time to develop."

They are phrases that have meaning at every level of basketball; they are accurate and each offers an equally important lesson. For as much as we want to see big men arrive in the NBA ready to dominate on both ends of the court, except in very rare occasions, it just does not happen. And those who do dominate normally are bigs who have played more than three seasons in college.

So as ESPN.com's #NBArank continues to roll out names, I look for big men who have not yet fully developed but already have shown some good production despite their youth. These are players who still have bright futures and to the Denver Nuggets' Kosta Koufos (#NBArank No. 274), I'm talking about you.

The Nuggets youngest seven-footer might also prove to be the most consistent big man this season, after an off-season filled with basketball.

"Minutes are up for grabs for those that want to take them," said Nuggets assistant coach Chad Iske.

"We have a real deep team and young team and all our guys deserve chances at minutes," Isked added. "But they have got to prove it out here on the practice court and getting in their extra work."

On the practice court Tuesday afternoon, the 7'0" and 265-pound Kosta Koufos was out to prove that he deserved those minutes. In a short five minute burst, playing on the opposite five-on-five team as JaVale McGee and Timofey Mozgov, Koufos erupted for 8 points and 5 offensive rebounds.

"The difference between offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds? You get an opportunity to score or get the team another chance to score," said Koufos. "Whenever the shot goes up, I just want to go for the rebound. I feel very confident in my rebounding."
