PF/C Kosta Koufos (CSKA Moscow)

Good point Bucknut11............

Koufos can score from the inside and outside, obviously he needs to get stronger, but that will come in time. He has a ton of potential and I hope that he decides to stay in Ohio and attend Ohio State.

Many believe he is a silent verbal along with Dallas Lauderdale.

Somewhat delayed revelation here: we're debating depth on the OSU basketball team. Depth 2 or 3 years down the road. Depth involving 4 and 5 star recruits. In the middle of football season.

Anyone doubt how much Matta's done for this program in just over a year's time?

No doubting here!

Those of us who are nostalgic about the days of Herb Williams, Kelvin Ransey, Carter Scott, and Clark Kellogg are just salivating over the great basketball that will be played in Columbus from now on.

I think 44820 hit the nail on the head...while Koufos, Lauderdale and Diebler would be a great start to the '07 haul, you don't pass on kids like Alabi or Love. What position you are labeled as is more important when it comes to your responsibilities, especially defensively. But if you can get a lineup out there in '08 that includes the likes of Lauderdale, Koufos, Diebler, and a warm body (Love, Alabi, Pope, Chris Wright, etc.), you do it. But if those others all decide to go elsewhere, the best pure SG in the class would be a nice addition to the Ohio 3.

Koufos visited <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Maryland this summer on an unofficial visit. He has family in Maryland. Koufos says he really likes the Ohio State staff and called the Texas game “unbelievable”. Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Duke are some schools he interested in. He says a verbal will most likely not happen anytime soon.

Koufos says he is aware of the "rumor" of his upcoming verbal to tOSU. He says its not true and he wants to see a few more places. Kosta liked his visit to Maryland but says he " really likes Ohio State" and speaks to the staff at least once a week.

OSU, Maryland, Illinois, North Carolina, Louisville, Duke, Wake Forest and Akron are at the top of his list.

I love Kosta for one reason in particular...he leads the country in Freudian slips. He talks about the fact that he calls Matta and Peters once a week to talk about the areas of his game he is working on. You don't do that when you already have an offer and are "wide open". You do that when you are trying to earn an offer from a school that you are interested in. Kosta is talking to the OSU coaches as would a kid who has already committed.

no kidding. that was a thinly veiled attempt at best to hide where he is leaning. if/when lauderdale comes aboard, i don't think it will be long before koufos follow suit.

Ohio’s Best Boys Basketball Players
Buckeye state boasts more talent than ever before

By Steve Helwagen

Over the course of the summer, Ohio’s best boys basketball players showed their stuff in various AAU and summer camp events from coast to coast.
These events helped Ohio’s best players earn reputations as the nation’s very best. The national rankings supplied by ScoutHoops.com are dotted with players from Ohio.

Five of the current seniors are in the national top 100, led by Dayton Dunbar’s Daequan Cook at No. 16. Even better is the Class of 2007, where seven Ohio prospects are listed among the top 50. That group is led by the North College Hill duo of O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker, ranked first and fourth nationally, respectively.

The sophomore class in Ohio also boasts two of the nation’s top 15 prospects, including Cincinnati Hughes’ Yancey Gates at No. 5.

“You would be hard pressed to go back and find three years consecutively where there is this type of talent in the state of Ohio,” said HoopScoopOnline.com Ohio editor Chris Johnson. “And there is not only talent but also some size. In that sophomore class, there are four or five really good players who are already 6-8 or taller.”

The Ohio talent quotient would be even better if Herb Pope, a 6-8 forward considered a top-10 national junior, had followed through with his stated plan to transfer to a school in Ohio. Instead, he began the new school year at his old school in Aliquippa, Pa.

With the summer camp and AAU season over, Johnson has reassessed his lists of Ohio’s top prospects and updated them. The following is a look at the top prospects in each class in Ohio high school boys basketball, as rated by Johnson.

Juniors-To-Be (Class of 2007)

* 3. Kosta Koufos, 6-10, power forward, Canton GlenOak (SH, 20th; HSO, 51st) – Born in Greece, Koufos averaged 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Johnson on Koufos: “He will be recruited by all of the powerhouses.”

Koufos listed Maryland, OSU, Duke, Illinois, Akron and Xavier among many on his early list.
